Overload, part 1: introduction and Purim

May 19, 2005 13:03

Whoa, its been over 2 months since i did a proper update. i've been an increadibly busy little boy, with uni and AUJS commitments. so this entry doesnt get too long and so i don't bore you all to death, i'll break it up into a few sections, but you should all comment on every part of it. i'll give you some time to read it all before i post again. lol
so sit back and stap yourselves in, cos it's gonna be a wild ride.

ok, so last time i did a real update, i told you i was seeing the Israeli President, Moshe Katzav. that was pretty cool. he didn't say much, he only spoke for about 15 minutes, but there were other things there, including speaches from different Jewish community leaders in Melbourne, and a few performances from Jewish kids. outside was a busload of protesters, waving Palestinian flags and shouting out annying chants while everyone was waiting in line. but they didn't cause any trouble except for being annoying pests. there were just as many police there, as well as a chopper flying overhead, if anything, the protesters were at the wrong place, cos they aren't gonna change anyone's opinion if they come to see the President of Israel. oh, and there were also an annoying bunch of Jews for Jesus morons around giving out fliers.

so then came the Jewish holiday of Purim, in late march. i went to a friend's Purim party the night before, dressed as a Chinaman, with blue silk gown and red hat with a cotton ponytail attached to it. i borrowed the costume from my neighbour. there were about 100 people there, and i saw a few people who i hadn't seen for ages. the next day (which was also coincidentally Good Friday, dressed the same way, i went to a Chabad Rabbi's place for lunch, where i had a bit to drink. he invited a whole bunch of students and we had a great time. One guy decided to come dressed as Jesus on the cross. yes, very bad taste, i know, but funny nonetheless. before Shabbat came in, on the spur of the moment, we decided to go to a Jewish nursing home and give out Mishloach Manot (little edible gifts) to the residents. one of the guys is a madrich (leader) of one of the Jewish youth movements and he had two boxes full in the boot of his car. thus was the launch of Project Cheppiness (Happiness, but you gotta say it in a Russian accent, most of the residents at t nursing home are Russian). so 7 of us got into two cars and drove there, and it gave us a really good feeling to be giving something back to the community, and to see the smiles on their faces when they see kids dressed up in the weirdest costumes (one guy was dressed up as a ballerina).

i'll be right back after the break, so stay tuned.
