Show/Books: The Vampire Diaries (TV Show)

Author's Note: This is my first fanfic ever so I beg for kindess! It's a lot easier for me to write Damon instead of Stefan but I wanted to do this pairing for Christmas. Oh and the Mall and lightshow are based off of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAR-pgKpzrw which is much much cooler in person ;)

Stefan grunted as his cell phone bounced off his forehead and landed on his lap.

"Elena calling" Damon said as he watched Stefan rub his forehead with a smirk on his face.

Stefan's phone sang loudly:

I can't be tamed, I can't be saved

I can't be blamed, I can't, can't

Stefan's jaw twitched as he looked up at Damon with raised eyebrows.

Damon's smirk spread into villainous smile as he pivoted on a heal and danced out of the room singing the rest of the Miley Cyrus song.

Stefan sighed as he picked up the phone. The caller ID said “Elena”. He answered it.

“Elena. What’s up? How’s your family?”

Aunt Jenna had decided that she, Elena and Jeremy should visit some relatives out of town for their first Christmas since the accident. They had left this morning.

“I decided not to go…”

“Why? I thought this trip was really important to Jenna…”

“It is! It is…I told her I would drive up tomorrow on my own to meet them. I just thought…well I wanted us to have some kind of Christmas together...Soooo I was hoping you would meet me somewhere?”

Stefan couldn’t help but smile. Elena’s sweetness warmed his heart. She wanted to spend her Christmas with him and couldn’t so she was doing the next best thing she could think of.

“Stefan?” He hadn’t realized how long he’d be silent in thought.

Stefan cleared his throat as quietly as he could “of course. Where?”

~~~~~~~~~~~
Stefan threw on his favorite jeans, a red dress shirt. He was slipping on his black leather jacket as he walked down the stairs toward the door.
“Off somewhere?” Damon asked from a doorway with what he hoped was only mild interest in his tone.
“Yes. I’m meeting Elena.” Stefan hadn’t even bothered to look at Damon as he walked by.
Damon’s brow furrowed “I thought she was out of town…some lovey dovey family type thing” He sounded almost sick when he said the words “lovey dovey”.
Stefan stopped at the door and turned back to acknowledge his brother. “She’s meeting up with them tomorrow. I have to go Damon, I’m already late.” And then he was gone.
Damon remained in his spot, the furrow between his eyes deepened and his glacial blue eyes darted from side to side as thoughts ran through his head. After a minute the furrow relaxed and the corner of his mouth twitched upward.
~~~~~~~~~~~

The ground was covered in a thin layer of snow with the tips of grass blades still fighting to be seen. Stefan walked toward an extremely large Christmas tree in the Mystic Falls Mall courtyard.  The courtyard was the center of the small outdoor mall which was made up of tiny shops on one lane brick roads. Each storefront had a unique architecture and was decorated with its own Christmas theme. The tiny streets of the mall were filled with people bundled in winter attire. Some were weeding through the crowds to get their last minute shopping done whiles other lingered talking with friends and family.

Stefan approached the small fence surrounding the decorated tree that dwarfed all else in sight.

Elena was leaning on the fence next to him watching the lights on the tree blink and dance. She wore jeans and an overly stuffed white coat. Thick white Uggs topped with fur kept her feet and legs warm. She looked adorable and he couldn’t help but smile. “The Mall huh?”

Elena turned her face to him with a smile “Yesss” she said she pushed away from the fence and gently kissed him on the lips. “We have about a minute before it starts!”

Her lips were cool and quick. “Before what starts?” he asked as he lovingly took her gloved hand in his.

“It’s a surprise!” She seemed very happy and excited. It warmed him - so many horrible things had happened the last few months. It made him happy to see her this excited about something. “Come!” She turned and began to walk away, tugging on his hand so he would follow. He let her drag him towards a crowd of people that were forming a ring about 50 ft from the tree.

“Ahhh” Comprehension dawned on him.

They stopped, turned and faced the tree with the others.

Suddenly they were in darkness with only the light of the moon and stars.

The tree came to life with blinding light as unseen speakers began playing Wizards in Winter. The tree lights flickered, danced, and alternated colors to match the beat of the music. Stefan’s eyes moved from the entrancing light show to Elena’s face. She smiled at him, squeezed his hand and looked back at the lights. He looked down at his hand - a feeling of concern ran through him like a shiver but disappeared as quickly as it had come. He turned his attention back to the light show. They stood there hand in hand for several minutes as the songs changed and eventually the light show faded to conclusion. The crowd clapped and cheered. Elena screamed a “wooo!” and whistled.

The surrounding lights came back to life and the tree resumed its normal, more subtle, light activity. Elena spun on Stefan “That was…AMAZING! I have no idea how they get the lights to do half of that but It’s sooo cool!”

Stefan laughed at her enthusiasm and nodded “I think I’m going to have to take you to one of the Trans Siberian Orchestra concerts”

“Ooh you’ve been?”

“Las Vegas 2007”

“You’ve been to Las Vegas?” Disbelief written all over her face.

Stefan looked around with mock agitation “why does everyone act so surprised when I say I’ve been somewhere or done something that is normally associated with fun?” He tried to look offended but he was smiling too much.

Elena laughed “Stefan and Las Vegas…” She shook her head. “Hey, can you ice skate?”

“Ice skate?” Stefan frowned “Isn’t that basically dancing on blades…on ice?”

Elena chuckled “yes”

“Well I don’t know if I’ve told you this before…” his words oozed with sarcasm, “but I don’t like dancing and I’m not sure I’m fond of ice either…”

Elena tilted her head to the side and blinked up at him, a seductive little smile playing on her lips. “I didn’t ask if you LIKED it…just if you could” She then turned and walked off to where he could only assume ice skating awaited him.

~~~~~~~~~~~
“If I fall…Damon can never hear of it.” Stefan said as he stepped onto the tiny ice rink the mall had created outside, mostly for small kids.
“Agreed” Elena grabbed his hand and yanked him away from the safety of the wall. “How can you be scared of falling?”
“It’s not so much the falling as the humiliation factor” He assured her as he skated gracelessly beside her.
They skated together, laughing and playing. Stefan fell, or rather was tripped at one point by Elena. Her phone’s flash went off before he could get up. He growled “I thought we had an agreement!”
“We did but you didn’t say anything about pictures!” She quickly skated away from him while waving the phone and laughing. Only the amused glances of passersby prevented him from catching up with her and breaking the phone.
When he did catch up with her he slipped his arms around her waist and whispered in her ear “I cannot wait until I am presented with the opportunity to exploit a moment of great embarrassment for you.”
She shook her head “nope. You won’t do that”
He pinched her side playfully “And how can you be sure of that?”
“Because Stefan. You’re a GENTLEMAN.” She kissed his cheek but he merely grumbled because she was probably right.
~~~~~~~~~~~

They ended up at sitting at the bar in The Grill sharing a piece of cheesecake as Elena talked about kitten she found when she was 5.

“She was so cute! I tied a bow around her neck and had a little basket I would carry her around in.” Elena was smiling but Stefan could tell there was a kind of sadness, maybe bitterness in her words.

He opened his mouth to ask what happend to the kitten but it was as if someone had abruptly changed the station in her brain because she suddenly asked “Want the last bite?” and scooped up the last piece of cheesecake onto her fork and aimed it for his mouth.

He opened his mouth to bite it but she pulled the fork back at the last second and laughed. He raised an eyebrow and watched her as she tilted her head to the side with a teasing smile. His hand blurred and then contained hers. He could have sworn the corner of her mouth merely twitched in reaction. Their eyes locked on each other. He lowered her hand to the countertop, holding it there while his other hand moved to her cheek. He lightly ran his fingers along her jaw before sliding his hand behind her head and pulling her face to his. The desire was too strong. He pressed his lips to hers. She stiffened for an instant and then began to return his kiss. It started sweet and innocent but it grew deeper, hotter. He felt like the world had faded away and there was just this moment. It felt like a lifetime and yet only a second. An internal struggle began in him. He had to pull away, to stop, but a hunger within him begged him not to. Against his baser instincts he withdrew from the kiss, his breathing a little heavy. He sat there for a moment with his eyes closed and his head down.

After a moment of the silence she pulled away from him.

“I have to go Stefan”.

His eyes opened and confusion flooded his face.

“I had a lovely evening” Her tone was different.

He nodded and finally spoke “Good night Katherine”

She smiled “Merry Christmas Stefan”

And she was gone with only a chill of air where she had just been.
