I have decided that the appropriate day for the holiday being held this Thursday, is Gratitude Day.
Thanksgiving Day has become a shopping opportunity, a sports day, a time of gluttony and consumerism.
Far from the meaning of 'thankful'.
In honor of "Gratitude Day" (on which I will probably overeat), a list of my 'gratitude' picks follows:
I am grateful for the lives of my children, their successes, and their loved ones. I am grateful that they have been able to overcome setbacks and/or addictions and and/or health issues.
I am grateful to my beautiful granddaughters: C advancing into adulthood and grappling with adult issues and J learning and loving school and loving all of us.
I am grateful for my life: I have some minor health issues but I wake up each morning and can accomplish something every day. These are not major accomplishments but they happen.
I am grateful to have two very different sisters who both love me. And whom I love.
I am grateful to my 'adopted' family members-people who have come into my life and taken me into their hearts and families.
I am grateful for the opportunity to travel and spend time with my family and friends. They are spread all over the states; from California to Arizona to Colorado to New Mexico and, of course, Michigan.
I am grateful for the basics of life: Food, shelter, clothing and friends.
I am grateful for the companionship of my barky dog-he is always loving and touching me.
Last, but definitely not least, I am grateful for this world (I wish we could overcome all the strife in it) but it is a very good earth on which to live.
And I am grateful for my faith, it has made much of my life easier to manage as well as giving me a worship family (one here in MA and one in MI).
So, for my many blessings, I give gratitude to God.
