A small number of vehicles got stranded under the Katipunan flyover last Saturday, 4 June 2005 as torrential rains caused flash floods. Unfortunately, I’m one of ‘em. This pesky flood also created a huge traffic jam stretching both ways from commonwealth to C-5 I believe.
I parked in front of Jollibee thinking I got away with something… I was really headed for Starbucks. But the rain was really hard and after just a few minutes of parking, and the time it took me to walk from the car to Jollibee, an ankle-deep flood has already formed. This did not bother me one bit, until I found out the flood blocked my only access to Starbucks. In that few minutes of indecision - if I should ruin my shoes or stay where I am - the flood has risen to the level of the sidewalk. Thinking it won’t rise much higher, I resigned myself to just stay in Jollibee and hang for a while. I didn’t expect it to stretch 4 hours long. That’s right! 4 hours of nail-biting suspense - praying that my car won’t get washed away, or if I have to get it from China Sea or something.
The flood reached a height of a car’s headlights, for those in the deepest part (right under the flyover). Luckily, I am parked a bit higher on the sidewalk. That didn’t stop the water from going in the car and ruining the engine though. The ones under the flyover have bunched up along the sidewalk, the flood raises them high enough with each wave that comes every time a brave vehicle passes through Katipunan, which by now is fully submerged in water. I can’t imagine what the owners of those cars are feeling.
I was there to meet someone. I warned her about the situation so she was saved from the dismal fate those motorists in Katipunan had. I waited those four hours for escape so maybe I can go to her and continue what was to be a quiet talk and coffee. When the time to leave came, I texted her and found out 30mins later that she’s on her way home, or could already be home. It’s disappointing how her lack of concern shows, like seeing your classmate say something stupid on TV. Because he/she could reflect something shameful of yours, being from the same school and all…
