HSM fics

This rambling is tsubasa_lupin's fault, seriously! People shouldn't let me get started like this!

I want to talk about one of my newest found love. Chad & Ryan from High School Musical, the pairing that saved its fandom from impending doom.

I was really close to put this fandom next to my personal nightmare, the Harry Potter fandom. Since I watched the HSM movie a few months ago, I was getting desperate for at least ONE fic with a good idea in it that had both decent writing and IC interaction. And you can imaging that, with most fans being 13 years old, the amount of crap out there is of greek proportions! OK, in reality it could never be as awful as the HP fandom can be, mostly because this fans aren't as creative as the Voldemort-loving-freaks, but it was bad enough.

I liked the HSM movie, the first one. I have a thing for watching people dancing around, so I liked the musical numbers first of all. I liked the message too, I guess. To not "stick to the Status Quo" is something I've been trying to live by since first grade. I love being able to connect with different people because I enjoy so many different things, I can't get "label" as anything in particular. Trying to teach kids the wonders of diversity (as basic as it is showing a jock enjoying singing) is a great thing.

But of course, the fandom really didn't pay attention to that. Most of the fics out there have the worst kind of stereotyping there is, and go with all the high school un-original drama plots known to mankind.

However, the second movie came out on august. And it wasn't Oh-WOW-Best-Movie-Ever! But it was fun and way too silly and what's most important... it gave us I Don't Dance.

Even though the song itself is good and the dance has a lot of subtext ("I'll show you how I swing"? Come on!) the two best parts of the movie are just before that scene, when Chad practically undressed Ryan with his eyes and asked him if he "got game". And right after, when those two are WEARING EACH OTHER'S CLOTHES!!

So, finally, the slashers had something to work with and fics exploring what the hell the Big Gay Baseball Dance Off (as I hear it called somewhere) was about were born.

So, here are some examples:

Ambush by alethialia
Where Ryan really, really wants Gabriella to be killed and Chad is having a blast with the whole situation.

"I'm not gay! I've had sex! With women," Ryan added, just to make that clear.

And, well, there'd really been the one, but with Troy's motley crew of virgins that so counted.

"And that's what turned you gay?" Troy asked, clearly confused.

"I hate you all," Ryan declared and then left.

Strategy, 2, 3, 4, 5 by temira
Where Ryan plots and acts like a diva. I love this fic.

"You get really into sports, man," Danforth said. "I mean, look at you... dirty undershirt, no hat."

"Would it ruin the effect if I said I'm going to need a manicure tomorrow?" Ryan answered, looking at his nails critically. Dirt was definitely ground under them.

Danforth laughed. "You are so awesome, man,"

Extra Innings
This are actually a lot of different fics placed in the same "universe" written by various people. It works beautifully with friendships and siblings and coming out. Best fics there are on this fandom, specially the mini-saga Fever. MUST READ!

'The clothes. The hats. The sparkles! What OTHER boy at East High has a color-coordinated outfit for every occasion?'

Gabriella shook her head and chided herself, 'No, no, that's a stereotype. You shouldn't buy into stereotypes. Just because he has a unique fashion sense, that doesn't mean anything!'

But there was also the whole theater thing... Drama Club... choreographing the winter musical!

'STEREOTYPE!' Gabriella's mind screamed at her again. Anyway, Troy STARRED in the winter musical, and she knew without a doubt that HE wasn't gay. Right?

Though Troy had proudly displayed his jazz hands during their big finale.

And, come to think of it, Troy did like those new Italian shoes and fancy clothes, too...

Ahh, feels so good to get this out of my system, finally. Witch reminds me there are some TMNT fics I was suppose to rec like, centuries ago! Next task, for sure.
