So, we tried a new restaurant near our home,
The Koi Palace , the other night. As Xaroth described it, they serve "fancy, authentic, home-style Chinese cooking". Very different from the Chinese restaurants we usually frequent.
Since it was someplace new, we decided to order new things. We got the Braised Chicken with Sea Cucumber and the Lobster served over rice vermicelli. The sea cucumber was very interesting. It has a very light flavor, and a texture similar to the fat you'd find on a steak or a pork chop. The lobster was good, mostly because lobster is almost always good.
The flavors were a little more bland than we're used to, but that's because we like the Americanized spicy food. We've done some authentic Szechuan, and really enjoyed that. Xaroth is not sold on going back to the Koi Palace, but I would like to try again. Looking at some of the other dishes that came out of the kitchen, I couldn't help thinking of the movie
'Eat, Drink, Man, Woman' . If you haven't seen it, I recommend it. The film includes some gorgeous sequences of food preparation.
Anyway, after dinner we looked up sea cucumber on
wikipedia . Such a bizarre creature, and I'm glad I learned more about it after I ate it (cuz I probably wouldn't have eaten it had I learned these facts first).
