Saturday was reserved for a tour in the City. At the breakfast I found out that you could have haggis, but ordered eggs and tomato instead. Then I started my day as a tourist in Edinburgh. My plan was simple. Go to the Scottish Parliament. Then walk to the castle passing Royal Mile. From the castle I'd walk to Lothian Road and have sushi for lunch at the restaurant I saw on Friday. Then I'd think programme for afternoon. Probably go to see Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
I managed to follow the plan, but it the schedule turned out to be a bit tight. But let's start from the beginning. I had a nice walk through West and East Meddow Park. From there I continued to St. Leonard's Street and thus accidentaly passed The Auld Hoose. I decided that I must visit it in the evening since I now know where it is. I countinued to Holyrood Road and took that to the Parliament.
I stopped at the first souvenir shop to buy some postcards. I ended up looking at the kilts, but I decided to check out other shops too and bought a bagpipe instead. I did buy the postcards, so I went to next Starbucks to write them. Then I continued to walk up the Royal Mile looking at the shops. It always seemed that the most interesting shops were on opposite side of the street.
I went into a shop that looked like a toy store to get something for my godson. It turned out to be store for Childhood Museum and since admission was free, I went to see the exhibitions. There were toys and other children's stuff on display including wonderfull train sets. There was this huge steam engine, which was abosultely wondrfull. There were also different kinds of fairground automatons like one about Sweeney Todd with a victim on barber's chair and Mrs Lovett's pie shop downstairs.
When I left the museum, it had started to rain. Nevertheless, I continued to the castle. Esplanade in front of the castle had seating structures built for the Tattoo. Since it was already afternoon and 13 punds felt a bit expensive for a short visit (and it was still raining), I skipped the castle and continued to the sushi restaurant at Lothian Road. I had selection of sushi and sashimi with miso soup and green tea flavoured ice cream for dessert.
After lunch I decided to stick to my plan and continued to walk to Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. Unfortunatelly, when I arrived there it was half past four and I found out that it would close at five. So, I decided to visit smaller Dean Gallery, which was smaller and free. There was a Magritte, a Dali, couple of Miros and a Picasso, to pick the artists I knew.
Then I walked back to hotel buying some stamps from newsagent. At the hotel I tried to find out if first class stamps are good for mailing overseas and concluded that I had bought wrong stamps. For a moment I was going to The Auld Hoose to have dinner because I was afraid that the hotel bar would be too noisy. That turned out not to be the case and I had nice Copenhagen burger with sun fried tomatoes, blue cheese and green salad. I decided against going to bar because I was quite tired from whole day walking and went to bed.
