Sorry Anons

Sorry anons, but the level of spam has just gotten to unprecedented levels. I've tried being patient, I've tried CAPCHA, and now it's gotten to the level of disabling anonymous comments. I swear to Pete, if I have to see one more spamvertizement for Ugg boots, Chanel bags, duty-free cigarretts, or cheap Nike jerseys, I'm gonna lose it.

rant, real life

God, it's the fricking worst. I never used to have much of a problem with spam--the occasional odd message in Russian, say, but now I'm getting 'confessions' of 'love' from spambots on my stories all the time, i.e., dating site ads. Even if I were looking to date, I can't think of a way LESS likely to get my business than to insult my intelligence like this.

I hadn't thought about disabling anon comments, but maybe it's going to have to come to that. URGH.

The thing is, after disabling anon comments, then I started getting the dating site spambots too. And disabling anon comments doesn't help because they're registered users (spambots, but still registered). The next step would be to confine comments to friends only, but that really kind of negates the point of having an LJ account, no?

Urgh, seriously? There's no winning. I'd like to take the 1-2% of people who respond to spam--therefore making it a worthwhile form of advertising to marketers--and punch each and every one of them in the face repeatedly.

I agree with you about keeping comments public; it's such a shame to even have to consider restricting them to friends only. I've always kept the majority of my entries public because I like the possibility of getting feedback from people I don't know, even though I guess for the most part I only hear from people I friended in Heroes. It's still nice to have the possibility out there. Spammers blow. :(
