It was frustrating, of course. A bit above and beyond how one usually thought, and not at all accessible by the average person. But it was grand to experience for all of that. God, yes.

John had to stop himself from smiling sometimes when Sherlock went into a deductive frenzy, baffling and irritating every other member of Scotland Yard but the long-suffering Lestrade. John had been privately amazed by Sherlock’s surprise at his astonishment of Sherlock’s skills when they’d first met. Who could fail to be amazed at that? And aside from Sherlock’s haughty attitude (understandable), John couldn’t comprehend why others were so irritated at his observational powers.

It reminded John of having gone on a school trip to an art museum. His teachers had explained that some of those who were considered the greatest artists today had, in their lifetimes, died penniless and alone, their legacy mocked and unappreciated. No audience had admired their work and no critic could understand it.

Today John was one of the lucky few who could appreciate Sherlock’s value now, who understood what he was trying to say when he casually offended everyone around them in pointing out the minutiae of the world around them. John could hear all those tiny details and marvel at them, try to take them into him, instead of stubbornly refusing to see anything that wasn’t expected.

Sherlock was avant garde, experimental art, loathed by most, and yet invaluable to all whom would come after him.

John finally let his smile show as Sherlock expounded on the details of the crime, appreciating this private showing while it was still his.
