Peter slammed the door with unusual vigor as he slid into the passenger seat of the ambulance.

“Forget to drink your coffee this morning?” Hesam asked.

Peter handed over a piece of paper with a long-suffering sigh as he crawled in the back to double-check everything was in place.

I lost a bet with Emma. I’m not allowed to talk except for necessary situations at work today.

“Man, I told you, never play rock, paper, scissors with a deaf woman!”

Peter looked up from his labors and made a motion for Hesam to turn over the paper.

Tell me something I don’t know, Hesam.

Hesam snorted and pulled the ambulance out of the garage.

Peter figured that after several months of dating Emma, he was pretty decent at sign language. And considering that Emma had been working at the hospital for over a year, more than a few people knew several signs. But using sign language with his girlfriend, who knew his body language and was tolerant of his mistakes, was one thing. Using them with the rest of the hospital staff, who were used to Emma’s more seasoned delivery, was something else.

“Uh, I don’t think you want that, Peter,” Nurse Ambrose said, blushing, as Peter tried to ask to borrow a dollar for the vending machine.

Peter went over his signs again slowly, and reddened as he remembered to put down three fingers instead of two.

---

Dr. Coolidge, Emma’s mother, took pity on Peter when he was in the break room.

“You think she’s having you learn something?” she asked, sitting down at his table.

Peter looked up and shook his head decisively.

“I figured that. Emma’s not that petty. Hesam says you lost a bet.”

Peter rolled his eyes.

“You shouldn’t have let Emma pick the stakes. She’s a champion at Truth or Dare forfeits.”

Peter exasperated glance and gesture clearly said, “Now somebody tells me.” But his smile said something else. Like he was enjoying the challenge.

“You know, you could just talk to me. It’s not like she’s around to catch you,” Dr. Coolidge pointed out.

Peter shook his head decisively.

“Good lad.”

---

Peter had a fleeting wish, sometime around noon, that Matt Parkman still lived in New York, as telepathy would have been damn convenient today. But telekinesis was a lot more useful for a paramedic. And it didn’t tempt him to cheat.

---

Emma was waiting for him when he came home, one of Peter’s favorite bands playing on the stereo.

That’s when he knew he’d done well. She didn’t always like how their sounds looked to her ability, and only put on that CD if he’d done something special.

Want to try again? she signed mischievously, and put one fist on her outstretched palm in the universal sign for a rock, paper, scissors match.

Peter shook his head and folded his hands over hers. What came after needed no words whatsoever.
