A/N: I tried to write this in the style of the short story Poor Bibi, written by Joyce Carol Oates (reprinted in the book Haunted: Tales of the Grotesque). It’s a fantastic tale, horror rather than smut, and delightfully disturbing, and I highly recommend it. All apologies to Ms. Oates, whom I do not own. Thanks to brighteyed_jill for betaing. Written for kethni for the Spring 2009 heroes_exchange.

Summary: Matt has a pet at home, and he really wants to make sure it’s happy.

Matt could hear her whining the minute he opened the door, the pathetic little high-pitched whine that meant she was starving for attention.

“Ok, ok, I’m home,” he called, kicking the door shut. He turned to lock, deadbolt, and bar it, not taking any chances. It wouldn’t hold against someone with super strength, but it would definitely give them a moment’s pause. And a moment’s pause was all Matt needed to defend himself against all but the strongest rogue specials.

Besides, all the security was less for his protection and more for his pet’s. She couldn’t defend herself, poor thing, and it was his responsibility to see she was safe. He had found her in an alley over a year go, starved and abused, her lovely dark hair shorn short and matted with dirt. She had begged him with her big brown eyes and what little voice she had left for his help, whining and crying for him to protect her and keep her safe. She’d practically melted his heart, and he couldn’t stop himself from helping her.

The other guys at work might have busted his balls for taking in a stray and nursing her back to health, which was why he didn’t talk about it. He knew what they thought about him already, and he really didn’t give a rip for their scorn.

Besides, he could change their minds for them, if he were so inclined.

Matt wearily put his gear away in the closet. He couldn’t leave it out anymore, because she might get into it and make a mess. He remembered the first time that had happened; she almost set off his gun, and he shook to think that she could have been hurt. That done, he grabbed his last remaining packages and went into the living room.

She was still in her kennel, huddled near the entrance, whining through the bars. While she hadn’t torn up her bed, like she’d done in the past when he’d been late, nor had she managed to escape, she had upset her water, because nearly everything in the cage was damp.

“I’m sorry I’m late sweetie, I really am, but still, you’re a bad girl,” Matt said firmly, reinforcing it with a mental command. Despite the affection he had for her, Matt was also a very busy man in a very dangerous job. He was under a lot of stress, and he didn’t need more of it when he came home. He didn’t entrust her training to anyone else, and so had resorted to using his powers on her to get her to understand the rules. Thankfully, that had worked wonders.

She whined in an apologetic tone, pressing herself to the floor of the cage, and looked up at him with those huge, melting brown eyes of her. Matt sighed. He could never stay mad with her for long.

“Ok girl, you can come out.” Matt unlocked the cage, and she all but shot from it, throwing herself at him in a frenzy of affection. “Shh, shh, it’s ok girl, it’s ok. I’m here. I’m here. Calm down, just calm down…”

Matt quickly sat down on the couch and she curled up on his lap, her long dark hair tickling his nose when she rubbed her face against his. She looked so different now from the ragged and dirty creature she’d been last year. Her hair had grown out beautifully, and Matt was careful to keep it brushed and clean, so she would always be proud of herself.

He stroked down her head and back to calm her, and smiled into her lovely eyes. His hand caught briefly on the strap around her head, but he ignored it. Some might have called it cruel, but Matt had to keep her muzzled. She had a terrible tendency to cry out very loudly when she was lonely, and even to bite when she was angry or startled. Matt didn’t want his neighbors to think he was neglecting or abusing his pet. She had just had such a hard life that she didn’t always know how to behave. He was working with her, but it was safer for them both to keep the muzzle on most of the time.

It look long moment for her to finally calm down enough to stop wiggling, and Matt smiled as he reached into the bag he’d dropped beside the couch to bring out the new toy he’d bought for her.

“Look what I have for you, pretty girl. See? It’s a little bigger than the last one, but you seemed to like it so much…” Matt trailed off as her eyes got huge at the sight of the toy. It was a very silly bright purple, but it was just the sort of shape she liked. He could feel her breathing faster in excitement, and he held the toy away from her to watch her track it with her eyes.

“Do you want it?” Matt asked. She whined in anticipation, and her eyes fixed on it. “Good girl, very good girl. You can have it now, but you have to stay here while you play. If you’re good, you get a treat later, all right?”

Another mental command reinforced his meaning, and she set herself more solidly on his lap as he let her have the toy. She pounced on it, her whole body writhing with excitement as she began to play with it. The wiggling created a marvelous friction, and Matt could feel himself swell and harden as he watched her play with her new toy.

Some would call him a pervert, a degenerate, or worse for letting himself get aroused by his pet’s playtime. Matt was of the opinion that those people could take a long walk off a short pier. He wasn’t hurting her, and this was only between him and his pet. It wasn’t like he couldn’t tell if she didn’t like it; he was unique in that regard. The morality police had no jurisdiction here.

She arched her back, eyes shining with happiness, as Matt reached down to flip the switch on the toy. It began to buzz and vibrate, and she yelped with joy, her whole body arching against him, as excitement peaked through her in waves. Matt helped her play, pleased to see her so ecstatic after obviously having such a lonely day at home, and gritted his teeth against his own arousal as she rubbed up against him in abandon.

When neither of them could stand it anymore, Matt gently shoved her to the floor and frantically opened his pants, bringing his straining hardness out into the open.

“I promised you a treat,” Matt said breathlessly, with a mental command for her to stay still, rapidly undid the muzzle from around her mouth.

She was quivering in anticipation when he finally let her go, and dived in to lick and suck him. Matt’s eyes rolled back in his head, and his hand stroked her hair in time with her frantic lapping. He was inexpressibly glad that her teeth were not sharp, and her mouth was wide enough to take all of him in. When he’d first started this, he’d had to let her get a bit hungry, and then slather himself in something tasty so she would lick it off. But now she did it purely out of love for him, just to please him, Matt was certain.

“So good, sweetie. So good,” Matt murmured. “Yes, just like that, more yes!”

Her wonderfully wet tongue seemed to know exactly where to lick to drive Matt to the highest peaks of excitement, and he had to grip the arm of the sofa to keep himself from writhing around as much as she had been moments earlier. He couldn’t even talk as every stroke from her tongue drove his pleasure higher. The pulses took him by surprise, but she only lapped and lapped, drinking him down with little squeals of pleasure, as Matt basked in the potent afterglow.

She crawled up on the couch afterward, leaning up against him, and Matt was feeling too indulgent to remind her that she should be on the floor.

“Good, girl. Very good girl,” Matt said finally, and slowly tucked himself back away. He was so pleased with her that he a decision he’d been putting off for months. He hadn’t put her muzzle on right away, and she hadn’t starting getting loud like she usually did. She waited in respectful silence, eyes shining for him. That kind of good behavior deserved more than the usual reward.

“I have another present for you.” She looked at him, confused, as he drew the little black dress out of the bag by the couch. A lot of people said dressing up pets was ridiculous, but Matt thought they could look quite adorable, given the right clothes.

“You’ve been really good the past few months… and I think it’s time for me to take you outside,” he said, pointing out the shaded window. She looked at him, eyes wide with fear.

“It’s ok, don’t worry. I remember, when I first saw you in that alley, how scared you were of everything. I remember that I nearly passed you by, but you persuaded me to take you home and make sure you were safe, that nothing would ever hurt you again. I’ve done that, and I’ve never regretted it, even if you’ve been a brat sometimes. But I want to make sure that you’re happy, not just safe. You can’t stay cooped up all the time. There are dangers out there; I know that better than anyone, but I can protect you. I think it’s time to start going out, at least just for a little bit, ok? Do you think you can do that for me?”

Matt whispered his speech to her mentally as well as verbally, and watched her slowly relax against him in acquiescence.

“Good girl. Come on, let’s get this on you.” Matt carefully helped her slip on the little dress, happy that he’d managed to find one that fit. People had given him really weird looks when he’d been buying it, or at least they had until he’d made them forget. He didn’t need anyone looking down their nose at him.

She stretched her limbs, feeling the dress all along her body, and smiled up at him. Matt drew her up and straightened her out, carefully brushing her long hair back into place where it had been in disarray after their romp.

“Pretty girl,” Matt said in satisfaction. “I have one last thing. I can’t have people thinking you’re a stray again, right?”

Matt pulled out the black leather collar with the enameled tag and carefully buckled it around her pale neck. She smiled at him, her eyes luminous, and he could feel her straightening in pride at the knowledge that she was now owned.

“Now, you’ve been a good in being so quiet, and I like that. But you know it can be dangerous out there. So you have my permission to get loud if anyone tries anything with you, ok?” She nodded rapidly, and Matt slowly pushed her back down on the couch.

“Ok, now you stay here until I take my shower and change, and then we’ll go.”

She only looked back up at him with the devotion he’d earned through his year of care, and his heart melted a little as he brushed his thumb over the tag on her collar.

“Good girl, Eden.”
