Summary: Dr. Horrible has a rather elegant view of evil.

A good evil scheme was intricate, unique, and unexpected. Dr. Horrible thought of them as artwork. He knew how every piece was supposed to fit: a timetable here, a driver’s route there, all fitting into a solid framework for him to start laying the important details. A clever device added bold, unforgettable color, a spectacular location provided a dramatic backdrop, an appropriately ludicrous demand made for interest, and the right posturing and laugh created shading.

In his mind, they were masterworks. In the real world, there were always things that needed to be tweaked slightly, but that wasn’t a big obstacle. If it just hadn’t been for Captain Hammer. Hammer was like the kid who, in kindergarten, would roughly color the sky yellow, the sun blue, and the trees purple just because he didn’t know what colors they were supposed to be. Then he was lavished with praise for being “original” on accident while Billy’s beautiful in-the-lines drawing was ignored.

Hammer was the kind of man who’d draw a moustache on the Mona Lisa, found the acme of sophistication in the funny pages, and put a picture of his own smiling mug above the fireplace. His bad taste could have been ignored, if he just hadn’t insisted on wrecking Dr. Horrible’s work as well. In that respect, he wasn’t just the kid who received unjust praise, he was the one who ran gleefully through the art room, upsetting easels, throwing paint, and sticking the brushes down other people’s shorts.

At times, Horrible considered that Hammer might have been a contender for the Evil League of Evil, he was so callous of all the good things in life, if hadn’t been so insistent on portraying himself as a hero. He was a self-promoting fame whore. A true genius promoted himself through his work, not by doing cartwheels in front of his gallery and bribing the critics to boot.

There was only one solution to this; make a statement so bold, so original, so hero-proof, that not even Captain Hammer’s interference would be able to mar it. Picking up his markers and standing in front of the blank canvas of his whiteboard, Dr. Horrible began to create.
