“No way.”

“Claire dear, it’s just a little surprise party for your father. It’s meant to be fun,” Angela said, her smile getting brittle.

Claire turned to the others in Angela’s immaculate living room for support. “Everyone who thinks this is absolutely an insane idea raise your hand.”

Three hands went up briefly. Claire smiled at them while she ticked off specific points on her fingers.

“Angela, how long have you known my dad?”

“Upwards of eighteen years,” Angela said.

“So you remember my dad is justifiably paranoid, right?” Claire pointed out.

“He thinks in Japanese whenever I’m around so I can’t accidentally read his mind,” Matt said. He was repressing the faintest of smiles when he said that, and Claire shot him a glare before ticking off that point.

“And he keeps surveillance up all over everywhere, so I don’t know if we’re actually going to be able to surprise him at all,” Claire continued.

“Claire, I helped teach Noah about surveillance,” Angela said.

“He was watching me for weeks and I didn’t even notice,” Mohinder said, taking the wind out of Angela’s sails. “And I was fairly paranoid then myself.”

Another tick, much to Angela’s annoyance.

“And, if my some miracle he doesn’t figure it out, he has a lot of guns,” Claire said. Behind Angela’s back, she raised a quick eyebrow at Peter.

Peter piped up obligingly. “Last time I went by his apartment unannounced, he almost shot me. From the bathroom.”

“Noah has guns in the bathroom?” Angela asked, momentarily distracted.

“He has guns in every room,” Peter said, nodded. Claire ostentatiously ticked off that third point.

“Well, I’m sure once he gets over his surprise… or not, he’ll have a lovely time with all of us there,” Angela said firmly.

Everyone snorted in derision, and Angela glared.

“You are all still his friends, aren’t you?”

“Sort of.”

“Sort of? Matthew!” Angela’s expression demanded an explanation.

“I did invade his house once. And shoot Claire. And kidnapped him so I could invade his mind,” Matt pointed out.

“And I did help him with the kidnapping,” Mohinder said nervously.

“Me too,” Peter added sheepishly.

“But Claire got over the shooting! And Noah’s a practical man, I’m certain he understood the circumstances behind everything else. The party will be fine,” Angela insisted.

“You’re his boss too, Ma,” Peter put in. “It’s kind of hard to relax around your boss.”

Angela was looking stormy as fixed Claire with a gimlet stare. “Claire, at least tell me you are on speaking terms with your father.”

“We did kind of have a fight the other day,” Claire allowed with an edge to her voice.

Angela tapped one manicured finger against her mouth, and finally threw up her hands. “Then you can figure out Noah’s birthday party on your own.”

Everyone waited until the sounds of Angela’s heels had receded down the hallway.

Then there was a huge sigh of relief.

“Come on, Dad’s waiting for us at McGinty’s down the street!” Claire said with a grin, heading for the back door.

“I thought Ma wasn’t going to go for it,” Peter laughed as he grabbed his coat.

“If I know at least one thing about my dad, it’s that he knows how to come up with a plan!” Claire grinned.

The door banged shut behind the four conspirators as they made their way to Noah’s real birthday party.

At McGinty’s bar and grill, Noah Bennet answered his phone.

“They’re on their way, Noah,” Angela said.

Noah smiled into the phone. “I appreciate the gift, Angela.”

“Well, being able to best me in an argument is quite a coup for Claire. It will help hone her skills,” Angela said, sounding amused.

“I’m sure,” Noah said, and hung up the phone while he waited for his birthday party to begin.
