One of my favorite mystery writers, Robert B. Parker, passed away yesterday. I'm still in shock. He was only 77. (Yes, I know the only thing seems like a strange thing to say, but the older I get, the younger 77 seems.) From all reports, he had a heart attack at his desk while he was working on his next novel.
Those in fandom may know that Robert Parker wrote the novel Appaloosa. Ed Harris fell in love with that novel and convinced Viggo to make the movie version with him. The movie is remarkably faithful to the novel, only adding more dimension to the character of Allie French. Mr. Parker wrote three more novels in the Appaloosa universe - Resolution, Brimstone, and the upcoming Blue Eyed Devil, which I just pre-ordered last week.
Robert Parker was probably best well-known for his Spenser private detective series upon which the old TV series Spenser with Robert Urich was based. His Jesse Stone novels were the basis for the CBS television Jesse Stone movies starring Tom Selleck. One more Jesse Stone novel is set to be released the first part of next month. It seems odd, and makes me more than a little sad, that it will be the last Jesse Stone book, just like Blue Eyed Devil will be the last book about Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.
