Training and Fun

Ziggy is coming up to two years old, but apart from
Sophie Rose Cohen he had the biggest share of Ryan's heart.

Ziggy was Sophie's protector. He'd always been placid
with her even when she pulled his ears and his tail and tried to teethe on
his favourite rubber bone.

Ryan and Seth of course adored their baby sister. They
managed to be home from college every evening for her bath times and to play
with her before her bed-time.

Ziggy adored children and Ryan loved him all the more
because of that. He just couldn't help loving Ziggy. Gentle, cuddly,
kind-hearted and playful, he was like a real live stuffed toy, animated by a
brilliant sense of fun. Ryan and Seth wasted hour after hour playing chasing
games with him and trying to teach him the basic commands - "Sit!", "Down!"
and "Come!" They threw sheets over his head and watched him have fun
escaping from them. They watched him bark at his reflection in the mirrored
wardrobe doors and try to get behind them to meet the dog on the other side.
(If Sandy was home Ziggy was NOT allowed in the bedrooms!). Though the kind
of squeaky plastic dog toys left him cold, paper fascinated him. He devoured
Sandy's morning paper faster than a box of biscuits. He caused havoc with
the wrapping tissue in the local children's shoe shop (much to Kirsten's
dismay), though Ryan had tried to warn her. Luckily the manager was a
dog-lover. Far from minding the paper-shredding she encouraged it. Everyone
loved Ziggy.

A box of Kleenex was the best gift on earth to Ziggy;
he'd rip it apart then shred the contents and later eject it on the Heath

He also destroyed more than one paper Ryan had written
for college, but he looked so sorry when Ryan had scolded him that he
forgave him at once.

Seth made him an improvised plaything which was Ziggy's
favourite toys .Scrunched -up newspaper stuffed into an old sock. If one of
the family dangled one in, front of Ziggy he would chase around the house in
pursuit of it, running up and down stairs and trampling across everything in
his path-sofas, chairs, the coffee table, you name it Ziggy trampled it.
Once he had retrieved his stuffed sock, he'd shake it with all the force of
a lion killing it's prey, then settle down to dismember it by the time he'd
chewed a hole through the fabric and fished out the innards he was usually
so exhausted that he fell asleep, his head cradled on piles of sodden news
print leaving the family holding their sides and in fits of laughter!! All
of this changed with an unexpected phone call two days later.

Too Friendly?

Two day's after the fun and laughter with Ziggy and his
favourite toy .The family where sat down for their evening meal and were
teasing Ryan mercilessly about a new girl he'd met at college.

"So when will the 'rents' be meeting Anita, Ryan?" Seth
asked earning himself a kick in the shin under the table and a glare from
Ryan.

Ryan flushed bright red and said "Never" at which Kirsten
and Sandy looked at him sharply.

"What!" he said while they continued to stare at him.
"We've only dated twice". "She hates dogs". "I'm a love me love my dog,
kinda guy". "She's crazy!!!"

Their second date Ryan had tried to 'kop' a feel when he
taken her to the movies and she'd let out an ear-piercing scream, that had
every-one turning in their seats. It wasn't a horror movie, so people had a
good idea exactly what was going on in the back row. After that night he'd
ended up dateless. Anyway it hadn't bothered Ryan too much as she didn't
like dogs. He was so going to kick Seth's ass tonight!!

Seth knew Mom would be asking subtle questions for days
to come. Seth really was in for an Ass Kicking night!

Saved by the bell Ryan had breathed a Sigh of relief when
the phone rang. "I'll get it" said Sandy, walking into the living room to
take the call.

A few minutes later Sandy had reappeared looking' shell
shocked'. Three expectant faces had looked at him. It looked like it was bad
news.

"It's Ma, she'll be here in two days for a long week-end
break"

"The Nana" three voices had gasped in union. This
wouldn't go well especially for Ziggy, Ryan had thought to himself. He
cringed. Did "The Nana" even like dogs? Especially over friendly dogs like
Ziggy?. He knew Sandy had never gotten around to telling his 'Ma' that Ryan
had a dog!!

Later that night Ryan had put Ziggy on his leash to go
for their late night walk. Just as he was about to go out of the front door
Seth decided he'd like to go too. They were just about to leave when Kirsten
had told Ryan she wanted a word with him when he got back.

The three of them only walked down the street that night,
stopping at lamp-posts every now and then so Ziggy could have a good sniff.
Ryan told Seth his fears that he and Ziggy maybe shipped out to the pool
house during 'The Nanas' stay. Seth told him not to worry because 'Ziggs'
was a fully fledged member of the family the same has Ryan himself and their
little sister craved Ziggy's company at all times

They returned home around an hour later, to find Kirsten
sitting in the kitchen waiting to have her talk to Ryan. Ryan rolled his
eyes as he thought he knew what would be coming from his Mom. Recently he'd
just started to call her Mom. He was quite at ease calling her mom now.

"Hey, what's up Mom" he'd called as he'd walked in with
Seth.

Seth had promised to have Ryan's and Ziggy's back in the
hopes that Ryan would forget about the ass kicking, he thought to himself.
Kirsten was sat with the distant expression on her face. The face she always
used when "The Nana" was looming.

All Kirsten said was could she take Ziggy to the vets the
next day because his distemper and Parvo shots were over-due. Ryan said it
was okay as he liked a Ziggy free hour every now and then when he was at
home even though he loved him to pieces.

The boys should have guessed that their Mom had an
ulterior motive. Today would be a good day for the boys to start house
cleaning before 'The Nana' arrived. Seth's face was a picture of horror he
hated wearing 'Marigolds'.

Ryan didn't mind cleaning up whatever mess Ziggy had
caused, even the occasional puddle, besides he was a responsible dog owner
and if his Dad had spotted one of those there would be a dog caring talk for
at least two days. Fuck that! Ryan was devoted to Ziggy. He might not have
won any prizes for intelligence...he would never have passed a SATS test in
'Fetch'-but he made Ryan's heart melt every time he looked at or cuddled
him. Besides Ziggy had got Ryan on first name terms with some 'Hot'! 'Hot!
chicks, who happened to be jogging in very 'skimpy short shorts' when Ryan
was walking 'his' dog. He didn't tell Seth because he didn't want him
butting in. "Oh no!!" 'Hot Chicks' he kept to himself.

Like a flower-child of the 1960s,Ziggy loved everybody,
from Ryan, Seth and the rest of the family, to the would-be burglar they
surprised one afternoon attempting to break into the hall. Ziggy apprehended
him until the cops had arrived by knocking him down and licking him half to
death, while his tail wagging never ended. Ziggy's tail never stops
wagging

Ryan didn't know if that was a good or a bad thing. He
only knew it was incessant, unless he was scolded, which wasn't very often.
He'd skulk away with his tail tucked under and watch Ryan with such an aloof
hurt expression. Then if Ryan so much as glanced at him, the smile was back
on his face and of course the tail was going like a flag in the wind.

Little did Ryan know of the ulterior motive be hind
Ziggy's vets visit with Mom.

A lot of tails and balls

While the boys were left to clean the house, Ryan got
headache and earache, from Seth's non-stop prattle on the cons of wearing
'Marigold' cleaning gloves.

"I feel like a Stepford wife" he whined.

"You'll feel like a Desperate Housewife, if we're not
finished when Mom gets back" Ryan had said.

Mean while there was a little drama unfolding in the
vet's surgery. Kirsten had to drag Ziggy through to the office on his back
side. As soon as the car neared the vet's office, he had the "I'm not
budging", "I know what goes on in there" look on his face. Kirsten coaxed
him out of the car with one of his favourite pepperoni sticks, which Ziggy
swallowed in one.

Then it was back to the 'Ziggs' versus 'The Kirstenator'
battle again. 'The Ziggs' stood stiff legged, not budging one inch until
Kirsten shouted "mouse" which goy his full attention. Ziggy liked mice but
played with real ones as well as his stuffed one. He's a soft mouthed dog so
he would gently carry them into the house (unbeknown to Kirsten of course)
Kirsten was terrified of them. She managed to get him into the waiting room
which was full of other pets with pet ailments. She felt a bit of a fraud
for bringing a healthy wet-nosed Ziggy.

They were right on time for Ziggy's appointment. He was
good while he had his shots and gave Mr Grieves a good face licking in
thanks. Then Kirsten just blurted out "Will you dock his tail please"

Mr Grieves gasped in shock. "Does Ryan know about
this?"

"No" Kirsten honestly replied.

"Well I would need Ryan's permission". "Why on earth
would he want that done to Ziggy? It's cruel, unnecessary and painful!" said
the shocked vet. "Spaniels are well known for their waggy tails! It's the
way they express joy and affection" Mr Grieves shrugged his shoulders and
shook his head.

"That's just it" Kirsten said gloomily. "You see my
mother -in-law's coming to stay and I don't want her to think anyone's
pleased to see her"

The vet removed his glasses and with bugging eyes and
mouth agog, did a very good imitation of a fish. He said "Just go Kirsten
... and ... err . Ryan won't hear of this from me . Let Ryan bring Ziggy
himself next time please. Good morning. . NEXT PATIENT PLEASE"

Kirsten hurried out with a look of shame on her face and
tears threatening to fall. While Ziggy gave her hand a comforting nuzzle and
lick.

By the time Kirsten arrived home she was guilt ridden.
The boys were just about finished but she'd stopped off on the way home for
their favourite take-out dishes. She even bought one for Ziggy. Fuck his
weight loss program for once, after what she'd nearly done to him he
deserved a treat.

The boys heard the door and Ziggy charged at Ryan as if
he hadn't seen him for fifteen years instead of the four hours it actually
was. Kirsten came in carrying take out boxes which the boys took from her.
They set the table and sat down to eat. Before they started to eat Ryan
noticed there was a spare one and Dad wasn't due home for a while. Kirsten
bit the bullet and said it was for Ziggy and the whole story came out. Ryan
was upset that his Mom would try something like that behind his back. He ate
the meal in silence. He excused himself from table with Ziggy and they both
went into the pool house. Mom and Dad knew he still did quite amount of
brooding so they had a new pool house built on for him. It was ideal for
Ziggy and himself to have a play around and not be in the way. He was going
for a major brood now. All these years and his Mom still had the power to
hurt him.

Seth followed shortly after leaving Kirsten in the
proverbial 'Dog House' she knew she deserved it.

Seth knew his brother was upset but what he found when he
entered the pool house totally shocked him.

Ryan was crying so bad, the tears running down his cheeks
and clutching his ribs.

Jesus and Moses Seth hadn't expected this, Ziggy tearing
hell for leather around the small room, with his sock toy. Those where tears
of Joy on Ryan's face and he was holding his sides through laughing almost
hysterically.

"Hey bro. . Can anyone share the big laugh fest?"

Ryan wiped his eyes dry and got himself under control,
before he started to speak "It's just ... I was thinking" he had started to
giggle again "I ." more laughing "I ." gasping for air now "I was thinking
that none of us male population in the Cohen household are safe at the
moment. . until 'The Nana' goes home. Don't go anywhere with Mom on our own.
It might mean castration or vasectomy if we so much as smile at 'The Nana'.
I'm warning you bro if you want to hang onto your pocket billiards us men
must stick together at all times"

"Are you going to warn Dad or shall I" Ryan asked. At
that the hysterical laughter started again. And Ziggy wandered over to sort
matters out by drooling over each boys face. "Yuck" Seth said. "Yuck" Ryan
said.

Catching hold of Ziggy he gave him a cuddle and whispered
"It's okay Ziggs. Yours are still intact, I made sure to check"

This set the three off laughing and barking noisily.
Kirsten popped her head through the door to ask if everything was
alright.

Both boys had replied in unison "Yeah Mom, just talking
about balls!", bringing more hysterics from the boys. She went back
inside.

Then a familiar voice called "Honey I'm Home!

"Huh c'mon bro" Seth said.

"Yeah Dad's home" Ryan said.

"Leave no man behind" They both said "Wruff" Ziggy barked
and they all walked inside.
