I'm so bored. And like the rebel I am, I'm doing last weeks Friday Five instead of this weeks...because I don't really get enthusiastic about talking about what plan my mobile phone is on (I'm on pre-paid so that was a stoopid question...)
1) What was the first song you remember hearing and enjoying on the radio Video Hits?
I never listened to the radio when I was younger, so I'm changing that to Video Hits because I was
obsessed with that show. Unfortunately, I began to be aware of music only when I was about 10, so that would be 1997. And the first song I really got in to was The Macarena. Not really a song to boast about. I remember when Wannabe by the Spice Girls replaced the Macarena at #1 which really pissed me off at the time. But then I started liking the Spice Girls too so that was only temporary.
I'm confused about the timeline, because Christmas 96, I remember my Year 4 teacher making our entire class dance the Macarena in Christmas outfits, for our performance item in assembly. Watching the whole school do the Macarena in solidarity was one of the most cringeworthy moments ever. So maybe it was 1996.
2) If you could only listen to five CDs for a year, which five would they be? (Boxed sets can count as one CD. Sigh.)
I hate this question, I could cheat by saying I would burn 5 CD's worth of mp3's. But I won't.
Songbird - Eva Cassidy
The 2nd Franz album (even though it hasn't been released)
Thunder! Lightning! Strike! - The Go! Team
Martha Wainwright - Martha Wainwright
Recurring Dream (the best of...) - Crowded House
3) What was your favorite year, music-wise?
Bah! I don't have a favourite year! I have a favourite decade, and that's the 90's. Which is so uncool. But watching Max on Foxtel and actually squealing about seeing the top 10 Minogue Videos of the 90's got me thinking. I love my cheesy music.
4) If you could witness one historical music event through all time, what would you pick, and why?
The Beatles concert at Shea Stadium. I want to see what the fuss was about. But with all the screaming girls, you probably wouldn't be able to hear anything.
5) Do you have a song that never fails to cheer you up? What is it and why does it do that for you?
Upside Down by A*Teens. A song about unrequited love, mentions falling behind in history, has the honour of having the words bouncing off the ceiling in the chorus and it's all packed up in 3 and a half minutes of perky Swedish pop. Reminds me of 2002 when I had a gigantic crush on Plankton, and I couldn't stop singing it.
Jacqueline by Franz Ferdinand takes me back to the heady days of last year when I couldn't wait to get out of high school because there were exams, and I've been with the same people for 5 years, and it was all getting to me. It's always better on holiday. This song never fails to make me cheerful.
