I think im turning into a bit of a hippie lately. Not that stupid crap like caring about people or tripping out all day but in the sense of simplify and connecting more with the natural world. I guess it makes sense that i would gain an interest in such things given that i am a nature lover and a godless heathen. On my last trip camping i spent my time practicing fire making, whittling, and actually trying to make braclets out of natural materials. It was pretty fun. Ive also become quite interested in barefoot running/hiking. I started out, like most novices do, with putting way to much emphasis on gear when going outdoors. Ive since started to simplify what i bring and though i still am really into learning about the latest gear, id like to think i take a more minimalist approach. Considering i started out in combat boots and 30lbs. of surplus army gear for a day hike to spending 3 days alone with just a tarp for shelter is a decent shift.
My most obvious manifestation of this trend im realizing is my desire to switch to more minimalist footwear. Sure i have fun bushwacking through the woods in my boots but i also am finding i enjoy quietly exploring and looking for wildlife. As society has deemed that bare feet in public are as offensive as the middlefinger im somewhat limited. I have started wearing my sandals though and i've been looking at getting a pair of five-finger shoes which are basically like gloves for your feet. They give you more protection than even the most callosed feet and they're acceptable in public, though admittedly strange looking. I'm going to try to hold back a week or two before i spring for a pair to make sure its really something im into and not just a waste of 80 bucks. We'll see though.
Ive also been getting into drawing lately. Not just the act but also the theory behind it. Its something most people dont really think about but its actually really interesting to me. I'm sure most people, even most people that call themselves "artists" wouldnt be interested in reading about how to hold your pencil or how a clinical knowledge of anatomy can be harmful to artist but hey. The book im reading about the size of a textbook and a little harder to read so hopefully i can find some time in my schedule to devote to it while still finding time to actually draw as well.
Lets see, what else is going on.. Samantha and I are about to have our 2 year anniversary next week. Thats pretty exciting. Though it looks like she actually has to do something else like all next weekend for school so we'll see what we can actually do to celebrate.
