Full Icon Tutorial in GIMP
This is my very first tutorial! :D
As it said at the top it's made in GIMP, but I'm sure it's transferable into other programs.
How to turn this

Don't copy this icon exactly. Use different pictures or brushes.
Please excuse typos. I'm not very careful. :P
Here's the original picture.
1. I zoomed into the picture and cut out a 100x100 of Leighton.
2. That picture was already sharp enough for me, but now is the time if you need to. Filter->Enhance->Sharpen then change the slider to discretion.
3. Now I duplicated the image two times, and change the middle one's mode to screen and the top to overlay. When I added the words I decided the effect didn't allow the words to be seen easily, so I erased around her head on the duplicates. I found it easy to you a bold brush until I got really close to her hair and then I switched to a feathered brush and went right along the hair.
6. I found these beautiful text brushes by
regen and resized them to 100 width. I used a few and just placed them under each other so it looked like a white block.

7. Put them over the icon and set it to Overlay. I erased the parts on her face and just left the text in the back.
5. Next I put this gradient from
blimey_icons over the icon between the overlayed layer and text brush layer. It's set on overlay. Now I thought it ruined the nice contrast we got with the screening and overlaying so I erased the gradient that was over her face like the brush.
6. You can add a border now. Make a new transparent layer. Select->All. Edit->Stroke Selection. Now I normally put a 1 px border and set it on Overlay, but that's to your discretion.
6. Now just save as a .png. :D
