Access Hollywood interviewed Ashley, and also Jackson/Nicola, on the red carpet:
They didn't show Jackson or Ashley on-air during the pre-show. And during the show, you only saw the celebrities if they were presenting. Since Jackson wasn't scheduled to present, we didn't see him on-camera at all. Ashley and Xavier introduced a performance by Miley Cyrus. Here's the clip:
