Ok, so I’ve been listening to this record for a while, and I’m sure it feels a little late in the game to be discovering, but holy crap. Mumford and Sons is completely blowing my mind right now. Such a deep emotional sound, like alt-pop that completely shunned any rock roots and set its feet firmly in bluegrass. The best way to describe it, though the word is quite overused, is “epic”. Every song just yearns to be epic. You can imagine it filling up a concert hall, or soaring over the sound of passing cars on a city street. The harmonies seem to be stacked layers upon layers. The instrumentation, while in some cases minimal, is a masterful orchestration of guitars, banjos, mandolins, fiddles, and the occasional organ or piano sitting underneath. There are drums, occasionally, but the percussive rhythm of the guitars and the relentless energy really makes the drum kit pointless, other than filling the random space. I’m not much of an ‘album reviewer’, at least in the traditional sense, so I’ll just say this. Get yourself a copy of this record, and just let it fill your head for a few days.
