I liked this reply! There seems to be a tendency when people talk about "past lives" for them to imagine somebody far less mundane than their present circumstances, despite the odds.

It's been said you can best judge a society by how it treats it's most vulnerable but I think you can also judge them by their statues as that shows what or who they value.

We apparently admire collapsed buildings and long-dead generals the most, at least locally.

Apropos of nothing that I could find, the waterfront in Jersey City is graced by this beauty, commemorating the Katyn Massacre of Polish soldiers by Stalin in 1940.
