Marijuana’s Medical Uses
Marijuana may be an illegal drug, but that hasn’t stopped researchers from looking into its health effects. Investigators from the Mayo Clinic recently reported that dronabinol, a marijuana plant extract, can relax the colon and lessen cramping and stomach contractions that can occur after eating. The clinicians randomly assigned 52 healthy volunteers to receive either a single dose of dronabinol or a placebo. They found that the reduction in cramping and contractions was most pronounced among the women participating in the study, and called for more studies of marijuana extracts. The findings were presented at the 71st Annual Scientific Meeting of the American College of Gastroenterology.
Another study, in rats, showed that treatment with a synthetic compound similar to marijuana reduced inflammation and sharpened memory. Marijuana has proven anti-inflammatory effects, which may allow it to slow the chronic inflammation believed to underlie progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Lower-than-normal rates of Alzheimer’s have been found among people who smoked marijuana regularly during the 1960s and 1970s. The latest marijuana findings, from Ohio State University, were presented in October 2006 at a meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.
