Okay, it's finally time for SQUEE. Because omg, you guys. I KIND OF LOVE FARSCAPE LIKE WHOA.
Before I jump into very spoilery cut-tag land, I want to publicly share a glorious piece of insight I had. It occured to me, upon completion of the series, that my top five favorite lines of dialogue completely summed up how I feel about Rachael.
1) "She gives me a woody."
2) "Not half as loose as Chiana."
3) "This girl is slow!"
4) "I'm your daddy"
5) "You've ruined my life."
Yes. (Except for the woody part.)
Okay, in case it was in any way unclear in my previous posts, THIS SHOW IS AWESOME. It's one of the most consistent shows I've seen in terms of writing, character development, etc, and it really did only get better over time. It did take me until season two to really get excited about it, but I was certainly hooked and intrigued from very early on. Overall I'd say season one is definitely the weakest and season three is the strongest, but season two is probably my favorite. It's much like Buffy s2 in that it's very hit or miss--it has both my favorite and least favorite episodes of the whole series. Keeping in mind I've only watched the series once (you know, not on fast-forward), my favorites were "Out of Their Minds," "Won't Get Fooled Again," "Crackers Don't Matter," and "Scratch n Sniff" (can you tell I like the goofy ones?) The serious and angsty stuff totally worked for me, too, but those are what really stand out in my mind.
More than anything, what impressed me about this show was that they took an hour and did so much with it. Every episode felt so long (in a good way!) because it was basically a mini-movie. They had so many twists and never focused just on one particular plot point with 40 minutes of exposition around it. Take for example in...crap, whichever early episode it was where they encounter the guys with the mega-bracelets that pump them with superjuice. (I sound like an idiot, but you totally know which one I'm talking about.) And D'Argo puts it on and goes all Rambo, and I'm thinking "okay, yeah, so the episode is about taking D'Argo down. Yawn." Actually, NO. It was off D'Argo in five minutes and on someone else. And then someone else. And there were actually other things going on! And it was all complex and stuff! Or like in "Out of Their Minds" when the body-switch happened twice instead of once. Shit like that. It really stood out to me as excellent story-telling.
Also, Aeryn Sun might have the best character arc of anyone I've ever seen in television. Coming from a Jossverse person, that's a big thing to say. I liked her from the start, and I don't know if she was ever necessarily my favorite character at a particular point, but she was always the strongest. (Zhaan was my favorite in season one, but she sucked in s2. Fortunately, Chiana stepped in and gladly took over being awesome.) I like D'Argo but was never excited about him, Pilot was in my heart from the start, and Rygel totally won me over by the end. John is goofy and wonderful (AND TOTALLY WATCHES BUFFY, Y'ALL WERE RIGHT), I just wish he didn't make so many pop-culture references. That got old quick. I was fine with Crais by the time his arc played out, but I never liked Stark for a moment. I'm kind of blah about Jool and Sikozu, but I really liked Noranti by the end. And OMG. 1812 = FAVORITE RECURRING CHARACTER. When he sings back to John in 4.01...omg. In my top 3 moments of the whole series. (Also up there: when John and Aeryn do the DNA compatability test and walk away grinning. YES.)
And Scorpius...well, I found him quite boring until he boarded Moya, truth be told.
la_cspan and I have talked in depth about stakes, because much of the oomph of stakes wasn't in the equation for me. I knew that everyone but Zhaan was in The Peacekeeper Wars, so the whole "Scorpius wants to kill John" thing never felt too pressing to me. Scorpius never scared me, he was just always kind of there. (I also really don't care for the Harvey bits much, but I didn't like Baltar and Six's storyline the first time I watched BSG, so.)
So when people started dying, it was just like "oh, okay. Well, they'll come back." And yeah, that sucks, but what can you do. It's very different watching a show as it airs over YEARS versus a dvd marathon in 40 days when you already know stuff. All the same, it was a great emotional journey that I very much enjoyed, and I look forward to a rewatch and talking about it with people and watching more vids and stuff. While it's not yet broken into my Top Six, I can certainly see the potential to get there and I can see myself being fannish about it. I do love it quite a lot.
Here are a few more random thoughts I can't seem to fit into paragraph form:
- upon
sweetestdrain's advice, I purposefully skipped over 1.14 ("Jeremiah Crichton") because it's the Beard Episode and it sucks. On the bright side, now I've saved an episode for when I'm feeling really nostalgic and want more Farscape I haven't seen. I also hear the commentary is made of win.
- I skipped "PK Tech Girl" TOTALLY BY ACCIDENT and didn't realize until Gilina comes back later on. I was like, "um, who the fuck is that and why does John know her?" I looked her up on IMDB, went back to PKTG, and realized I had totally missed it. And since it's really critical in the John/Aeryn storyline, I'm kind of glad I have that piece now, AHEM.
- I love the name Talyn and want to name all my future cats that.
- I never was able to slash any of the three main female characters successfully, so I was THRILLED when Chiana started flirting with EVERY WOMAN SHE MET. Is there a vid about this? Because I really really really need to see it. (I'll make it if I frelling have to. I WOULDN'T REALLY MIND.)
- Splitting John was a very very smart move, so much so that it totally outsmarted me. I was sitting there going, "STOP BEING SAD. YOU HAVE ANOTHER ONE. HELLO." But the way they played it was so right and way smarter than me, and it was fucking awesome television.
- The only time I got teary was when John was on the moon saying goodbye to his Dad. I have a thing for parent/child relationships like that.
- The s4 cliffhanger was rough even for me, someone who had the next segment readily available to watch. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW YOU PEOPLE DID IT. NO, SERIOUSLY. HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE.
- PKW really ended the series well, I think, and I understand now why people are scared about these upcoming webisodes. I'm glad they biologically linked Sebaceans to Human, too. Very smart move, and a nice way to tie up that glaring item of convenience.
The best way for me to share the rest of my thoughts (chronologically as I watched) is really to just show you some email threads with
la_cspan.

SLOW THE FUCK DOWN. I STILL HAVE 4 MORE EPISODES IN S1, YOU WRETCH. I'M TRYING TO CATCH UP AND FAILING SPECTACULARLY.
On the plus side, Chiana just showed up and she's wicked hot. So, that's awesome.

1. Chiana is fucking awesome. Also, kind of a whore, which I enjoy.
2. NEVER SLOWING DOWN. ALREADY UP TO 3x03. SHOW SO GOOD. ZOMG. Keep in mind, I have an hour commute, plus I work out, so I spend a lot of time staring adoringly at my iPhone and crying about how much I love Aeryn Sun.
3. How are you liking it so far? THIS SHOW = MADE FOR VIDDING, I SWEARS. They do so much weird shit, you can basically get footage for any story, any pairing, anything ever. Also, s2 is exponentially more awesome than s1, so SO MANY GOOD THINGS ARE WAITING FOR YOU.

Today's Awesome Farscape Line That John Enjoyed (under the premise that "she gives me a woody" WILL NEVER BE TOPPED): when they think they're all going to die and Rygel says, "should I disrobe to make it more memorable?" AMAZING.

1. "She gives me a woody" has not TECHNICALLY been topped, like, in the actual reality of the show, but in season 2 there are two episodes where people are, ahem, not quite themselves, and so there's a lot of FANTASTICNESS in those. [tongue wave]
2. This is the most deviously awesome plan EVER and I'm super psyched to be involved.
3. CHIANA IS A WHOOOOOORE. [is only up to 3x03]

1) I KNOW. I WAS LIKE "...DID HE MAN-TAN?!" BUT WHATEVER, IT'S AWESOME. ALSO, CHIANA. CHIANA CHIANA CHIANA. SHE'S MY FAVORITE WHORE EVER.
2) FOR. REAL. SOMETHING WEIRD AND MAGICAL HAPPENS, AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW OR WHY.
3) I CAN'T REMEMBER HOW S.1 CLIFF-HANGS...OH! OH! MAYBE DARGO *DID* MAN-TAN, SINCE THEY WERE HANGING OUT IN SPACE NEAR THAT SUN FOR SO LONG. HMMMMMMMMMM.
4) I'M UP TO 3X13 AND I STILL LOVE THE SHOW, EVEN THOUGH I HATE 3 OF THE CHARACTERS. I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT WORKS.

>>But speaking of Farscape, I watched 3.03 last night. Thanks to IMDB, I knew Zhaan was leaving eventually (though I thought it'd be later on, wahh!) When she started that REALLY LONG GOODBYE SCENE, I knew she was going for good. And I'm like, come on guys, THE GENERATOR IS ABOUT TO BLOW. YOU DON'T REALLY HAVE THIS KIND OF TIME. But it's tv, whatever. I kind of almost teared up for one quick second, but not really.
OH ZHAAN. I posted my thoughts about that in my post about 3x12, so you'll get to them soon, but yeah. I miss Zhaan also because I fucking hate Stark. I hate Stark so goddamn much. And Crais is really boring.
In fact, to give you something to look forward to, Stark eventually leaves (YAY), which is a spoiler that I think you can forgive me for. GOD, SO GLAD HE'S GONE.
I like the Scorpius in the head stuff, but that's because I think it's a fascinating contrast, and a very different use of a villain. I mean, Scorpius is a bad ass motherfucker in "real life". The thing with the thing making the dude eat his own finger off, and EATING JOHN'S BRAIN MATTER OFF THE CHIP, GAAAAAH, I CAN'T EVEN. And so yeah, they build this intensely creepy bad guy who has no qualms about causing pain and doing whatever it takes to get whatever he wants, and then the writers...mostly spend a lot of time putting him in little outfits and making him (or part of him) help the good guy.
And it's so *weird* because by the end of season 3, I kind of...not *like* Scorpius, but I think he's an interesting character with an interesting backstory, and sort of like Gaius, I admire his williness to do absolutely ANYTHING to survive -- but he's still a scary motherfucker who tries to kill John a lot. And I like John. I guess what I'm saying is that it's entertaining, and it's an unusual experience for me to watch a character, and enjoy watching him, and not like him or want him to win in any way. I don't sypathize with Scorpius, I don't think he's ever making the "right" choice, I don't see things his way, even when I understand his point of view...but he's fun to watch. Also, I think it's fun to imagine the conversation they had in the writer's room during season 1, like, "Well, the PeaceKeepers just don't look enough like S&M freaks...we need MOAR LETHAR. AND FACE HOODS."
>>But CHIANA! Is a WHOOOOOORE!
SUCH A WHOOOOOOOORE!!!! God I love her.
>>And I like John/Aeryn a LOT, which surprises me kind of.
JOHN/AERYN OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. OMG.
OMG.
I KIND OF LOVE THEM. A SMIDGE. YOU MAY HAVE NOTICED.

I KNOW RIGHT?
I also like the part where D'Argo says, "I'm your daddy." That's probably the line, that, were it possible, would be the noise for every phone, doorbell, elevator, computer beep, etc, for the rest of my life.

In "John Quixote" (which, btw, is officially the weirdest episode yet), wasn't Stark's mask on the wrong side? It was driving me CRAZY. Argh. I assume this was just part of the wackiness of the episode and they did it on purpose, I just want to make sure I'm not crazy since no one said anything about it.
Delayed thought re: "Won't Get Fooled Again" - Rygel puts the "dom" in "dominar". FTW.
I am finally, *finally* liking Scorpius as a character and storyline now that he's primarily out of John's head and on Moya. HUZZAH.
I miss Zhaan.
If it's possible, Aeryn keeps getting hotter.
I want to see my John/Chiana vid NOW.
