Vondal's Vandals: Into the Cold

Oct 20, 2010 08:32

The chill wind blew across us as I cracked open the door. Veralis had warned us of the cold ones here but she said the prize would be worth it. I tried to tell her that if she had seen weapons of great power in this room then chances are someone had already found them and taken them. Still it seemed the opportunity was too much to pass up.

Ice pillars stretched from snow-covered floor to frosted ceiling and a icy win blizzard blew through the room slowing us down and freezing us to the bone. I smashed one of the pillar with my axe wondering if some mage was using them to target the unnatural wind on us. Instead I found a frozen zombie inside and suddenly the other pillars burst open as well. I called for Snowfoot to lay down some protective roots for us, but Akmenos couldn't hear me over the winds, or he couldn't make it to us as he had found a frost giant or something. We could just hear his cries but the snow and the zombies hampered our movement. Enna teleported behind the giant as I tried to tie up the zombies, Snowfoot desperately tried to keep Akmenos alive and Akmenos blasted the giant with all his might.

It was a brutal ferocious fight and it would have had us sweating if not for the cold. When the enemies were vanquished and we licked our wounds there were no weapons to find. Perhaps there is some truth to Akmenos' claims that the head of Veralis is leading us to our doom.

Notes
That first fight was brutal, but for most of us Protective Roots really did help out. Damage Resist 5 when you are constantly being hit by damage 5 auras and ongoing 5 damage. Only Akmenos wasn't in the area of effect when we pulled it off, which took some maneuvering, but was worth it. For a low level utility power it is pretty amazing. Snowfoot was scared that the zombies would get her but I say you haven't lived until you've made a couple of death saving throws. Seriously though getting used to fighting with damage resistance is tough, but it is so awesome.

The second encounter was the first time we dominated a battle in a while. The enemies had a couple of powerful attacks but we were able to wrap them up with area of effect attacks and marks. It was over pretty quickly as well. Also this was a fight where I actually got to be a defender. I took most of the damage for a change and even got bloodied and had to burn my second wind. We could have carried on without an extended rest but it was time to finish and we had enough for a level so extended rest it was.

Now that I'm 9th level I'm actually taking a 5th level daily. All the 9th level dailies for fighters seem to be bit one off hits, or daily bursts. Sure the bursts do quite a bit more damage than my encounter bursts but I probably don't need any more burst effects. So instead I'm going to take Rain of Steel which is an aura stance that hurts anyone next to me, with my burst attacks and come and get it I can see it being pretty useful, especially for crowd control.

The only other decision is whether to retrain. I'm thinking of dumping my Barbarian multi-class feat,(daily free +2 damage and perception trained), primarily because both Snowfoot and Enna have quite high perception. I think some diplomacy might be better even though I have no Charisma, though I'm not sure I'll find a better ability than the Barbarian one. My other options are dropping my regen daily utility because I never get any use from it (and it is also a stance), or perhaps my covering attack which I never ever use, primarily because now it is only Enna and I that get in close and Enna can flank from anywhere with one of her powers.

Decisions.

Best Maneuver
~Vondal vaults over the barricade and sucks the archers and footmen is with Come and get it and then attacks them all. Enna follows up by teleporting to the other side of one of the archers and using Fox's Gambit. Her attack kills the archer so she shifts into flanking position on the other.

Best Vandalism
~Vondal smashes a pillar. Akmenos tries as well but barely chips the thing.
~Akmenos fires an area effect fire spell which centres on Vondal and scorches his beard some.
~Akmenos opens a door looking for the treasure and finds a frost giant. He then does his best impression of a punching bag, but just like Muhammad Ali before it was all just a rope a dope ruse. He took his beating like a champ and lashed out at the giant. Enna got the killing blow but still.

The turn of the dice
~I thought I would just mention Lance rolling a 1 and then rolling the next attack and getting a 20. Aren't you supposed to get there sequentially?
