*Curio will give him a wave and a bow as he wanders through on his way to the kitchens--and, once he's buttered some rolls and spread them with jam, he'll bring them back with him in case Richard wants any (peering over his shoulder)* What's this? Is't writing in some other tongue?

"In a manner of speaking. It's notation used for writing music. See, here is the lyric," Richard indicates with his finger, "and these symbols here denote the rhythm and pitch."

*follows them with his own fingers, at last declaring with a laugh* 'Tis far too much for me! What dost thou play?

"Nothing well. I sang a little, back home, but most people learned to. It was a common form of amusement, and Ada played quite well on the piano."

*beams* I thought to sing to mine own Rosalind--and if she laughed, 'twas fair in the attempt.

He smiles as well. "Music becomes sweeter for love of the musician, always."

Ay. *a dreamy little smile--and then offers his rolls* Wouldst thou like some simple, sweet repast to ease thy study of notation, sir?

He smiles a little smaller but less far away. "Thank you." He takes a roll. "And how are you, dear Curio?"

Ah, passing well. *sits on the floor beside Richard's chair, taking a bite from one of his rolls* I have been maid and boy, and now am resting as myself again.

"Ah. I was a boy again, I think, but it's all rather blurred, as if I only dreamed it. It was so last time it happened as well." He absently runs a finger over the pad of his thumb. "Tom was a woman as well, for a bit."

'Twas pleasant dreaming, in thy company. *laughs* But Tom was far the fairer maid, I wist; his hair waved like the autumn-bronzed wheat-- *but it's only a teasing little reverie, and he breaks off with a smile* My lady, too, was changed to a man, and merry were our sports in altered guise.

"Indeed." Richard's look and voice are both quiet, and he takes a bite of his roll.

*looks up at him, not sure what that expression bodes* Art sad, my friend? Or didst thou badly sleep?

He shakes his head. "Forgive me. I simply..." He hesitates. "May I speak frankly with you?"

*tilts his head* An thou wish't, I will thy confessor be, and keep thy secrets safe as would a priest--

"It is not..." He looks down. "It is rather complicated, I fear."
