Richard has had a rough couple of days. After finding out that the woman he loves might have a son, named after him, which may or may not be his, and the debacle that was Valetine's Day, Richard was thoroughly rattled, and perturbed at himself for being so.
He has taken a bit of brandy from the kitchen and removed to the libary, where he is looking through books in an attempt to find something with which to occupy his mind. Possibly learning a new language, though Richard, as usual, has a hard time commiting to anything.
