Waaaaaait wait wait wait wait.
If stage three of the demographic transition only really starts to occur when people are unable to find (or divvy up) sufficient resources to start a family, then that explains why it's happening in some parts of the States (the Coasts in particular) and not happening in other parts.
The poverty level in the states is still pretty damn wealthy compared to many parts of the world. We can still divvy up stuff. People may be making less money in the midwest, but they're making (or receiving) -enough- to do so anyway. Add that together with already-extant social forces (wheeeeee secularization makes birth control okay!)...
I have no idea if that actually works, but it's worth remembering for a little bit.
