It's interesting to note that places tend to be humanised in the female gender (i.e. Mother Russia). Anything from buildings and areas to entire countries.
The romantic in me thinks that falling in love with a place has many parallels with falling in love with a person.
And just as I have loved different people for different reasons; thinking about it, it is just so with my favourite places.
Vancouver is an unassuming place, proud yet unbragging (if that wasn't a word before, it is now). It totally enjoys the small pleasures and is completely welcoming. The ultimate girl-next-door of a city.
And as I sit in the window seat of a cafe in Covent Garden, there's no way I can't say London isn't a femme fatale. It's brash, completely self-aware and confident. It can swallow you whole and not break its stride, but you can't help but be drawn in by its depth.
For you American readers, I realise I've inadvertently described Betty and Veronica.
But for the record, I've always been a Betty kind of guy anyway...
