Summary: After leaving the campus, Ether wanders the town and finally finds himself standing in front of the cathedral. What does he discover within those stone walls..?
Sometimes, living in this academy bothers him more than it should... He cannot pin it down, probably because the number of things wrong with his current existence is too great and too lacking in answers for him to easily accept any of it. Sometimes, the lively sounds of school life feel completely off, like the infamous music reel of children playing to melancholic sounds coming from a music box, the one made popular by so many horror movies. Sometimes, fellow students bother him far too much... Perhaps, because he sees all the blank silhouettes around him and realizes that the few people who surround him, the ones who still have their faces and their sense of self, are only this way because they're critically important to whatever is happening here. Sometimes, he peers at his hand and remembers the cool, soothing feeling of reaching into Melusine's heart and grasping something incredible, something sweet and fluffy like a piece of cotton candy, familiar like the first sunset scorched into one's memory and stronger than any sword in existence.
Sometimes, he feels like he's completely lost, all alone, in this strange world.
Step by step, his legs carry him down the streets of the old districts. At first, he doesn't truly care about directions... He only desires to abandon the campus and keep walking until he's as far away as possible, until all those bothersome things, even the precious bonds with people and the comforting smile of his accidental bride, are left behind. Until he doesn't have to think about any of it.
But then, he realizes something different. His senses register the blank stares and worried whispers of the faceless students walking up and down the street. In the corner of his eye, he notices a harsh glare from a passing shadow that he now recognizes as the teacher from his class, the one whose name and face he could never remember. This trail of vicious thoughts and merciless signs soon invades his mind and melts together, forming a warning against him moving in that direction. In the back of his mind, a part of him realizes that he should obey. He should obey all these warnings, turn around and go back to the campus, where he can hide in his room and hope the noise and worries go away.
However, a much larger part of him demands to rebel, to press forward against the will of these shadows on the streets, to break through unspoken rules and even ignore the rising pressure of his own mind. It tells him to abandon all these painful things, force his way past them and seek out what he truly wants... And he wants only one thing, one very small and yet endlessly important thing that seems to drive his entire existence these days. He only wants truth.
It is his search of truth that places him here, in front of the old cathedral in the middle of the town. His scarlet eyes narrow angrily as he looks up at the blackened walls, looks over the windows of stained glass and finally focuses on the large marble cross that decorates the rooftop. As he considers his situation, his painful lack of memories and identity, as well as his enforced role in a game he never wanted to play, he cannot help but feel like this place is mocking him.
And, perhaps, it is because of these worries that he loses the remnants of his hesitation.
He makes a short step forward, reaches forward and forces the door open. The darkness from the large hall pours out of the building and almost seems to swallow him whole as he makes another step and disappears out sight.
Right now, he can do nothing more than hope that this will bring him closer to the truth.
