2-12-07: The End of an Era

Feb 12, 2007 22:18

This is Marty telling Phillip to take care of the team for him next year.

When I say end of an era, I mean this is the beginning of a championship era. I have confidence in the Chargers organization and A.J. Smith and trust that whoever they bring in will take us to the next level. I will miss Marty though. He resurrected the franchise from the bottom dwelling years we had in the late 90s. For whatever reason, he only succeeded in solidifying his reputation for losing when it counts more while he was in San Diego. I wanted to give him another chance this year, I want to see Marty win a championship some day, but now we know it won't be with the Chargers.

It's an unusual situation we have here in San Diego. Sometimes after a good year, teams will see a lot of their players start making big time money in free agency. But after the great season we had in '06, knowing we had most of our important players locked up for years, we instead ended up losing a lot of our best coaches, at all our best positions. Tight Ends Coach, Runningbacks Coach, Linebackers Coach, up top to our Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Coordinator, and now our head coach. It's a little puzzling to look at it. Usually after a horrible losing season you'll see a whole coaching staff get wiped, that's the only thing this resembles.

I'll tell you what though, I'm lookin forward to next year. You know everyone learned from this year. Our players know what it's like to play in the playoffs. Chargers '07-'08 baby, Hallelujah Hollaback.
