I'm Japanese; well, American by birth, but all my relatives are Japanese. :D
...But since Yao is (I think I've cheerily said this ten times before) my little black dress for the APH fandom, I'm not too sure how much my nationality affects my pairing. And while I do put Yao in a lot of noncon situations, I try to even it out (read: vary it around) with some opportunities for fan/happiness/crack. *this sounds like rationalization, even to me* --;
Okay, I'll be honest: while I don't think it was active, and I'm loathe to say only, I think that my nationality had a lot to do with me picking Japan and China to ship as an OTP for hetalia. I mean, it's a country that feel relatively close to, and a country whose culture and history I appreciate greatly (even before hetalia!), so I guess it's pretty natural. But what started out as a fleeting interest - at best - that was maybe the result of my "cultural identity" (even though I identify myself as American at first thought...), went on way deeper and for way longer than I thought it would, and that was definitely a result of my actual interest in the subject.
...As well as their lengthy <3 historical background! :D
Another question (I edited the main post): How "forbidden" is this relationship? I know Yao considers Kiku to be a brother, but there are also the governments and the people to consider. There's a general attitude in China that women who go off with foreigners are shameless because they do it for the money/there's not enough women for the Chinese men.
