So here at the apartment in LA we don't have cable. We don't even have an antennae to get the network stations, and to be honest, I kind of like it. It has made me read more, and watch more quality movies, rather than just waste my time away with daytime tv, or shitty summer programming. But here's the thing: I'm out of stuff to read and watch! So ( Read more... )

Jimmy Corrigan: Smartest Boy on Earth (the graphic novel) by Chris Ware is currently my favorite book. I also own Acme Novelty Library #17 by Chris Ware, and it's also awesome.

i used to hate non-fic too, but it's been growing on me. Stiff: the Curious Lives of Human Cadavers by Mary Roach is HILARIOUS and really, really interesting. But you've probably already read it. If you haven't, GO GET IT.

Invisible Man by Ralph Ellis is a real classic. I had to read it for a class last quarter and I really enjoyed it. It's not the Sci Fi one, it's completely different from The Invisible Man.

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and Life of Pi by Yann Martel are excellent books that I really loved and really don't take long at all to breeze through. I was in a good mood for days after reading The Alchemist... don't ask me why lol. It was just kinda inspirational.

If you like Sci Fi, I LOOOOOOOVE Joan D. Vinge. She wrote the series that includes Psion, Catspaw, and Dreamfall (I think in that order ( ... )

and if you REALLY want to branch out, my favorite poet of all time is Adrienne Rich. I'd suggest renting (or heck, buying if you like poetry) The Fact of a Doorframe which is a collection of her work from 1950 to 2001. half of my copy is highlighted and dog-eared lol.

Thanks for the suggestions Beth! Umm I read a book by Zadie Smith called "White Teeth" in the Spring, and I just fell in love with her writing style. Shes funny while attacking some serious issues.

Also if you've read any graphic novels I'm sure you've read "Watchmen" by Alan Moore, but if you haven't its definitely worth checking out. Most modern Superhero stories (from "The Incredibles" to "Heroes") have grabbed ideas from it, its quality stuff.

And last, if you're around a theater that shows limited releases this fall check out "The King of Kong". Its a documentary about two men competing for the high score in Donkey Kong. Its really funny, and also one of the best real representations of a hero and a villain I've seen in some time.

ANYTHING BY BRET EASTON ELLIS! He writes a lot about Los Angeles because he grew up there and he even wrote this amazing short story about Vampires in LA in his book The Informers... he might be a bit weird for you but give 'em a whirl <3

P.S. I'll be on vaca in FL when you get back to the miserable midwest *sad face*

My suggestions are as follows:

The Babysitters Club Series- They're well written, thought provoking--simply a great read. You truly go on a journey with this series. You said you're also interested in TV- check out the series based on this book. I think you'll enjoy it.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margarate- Wow. If you think Margarate grows as a person during this book, wait until you read it. It'll change the way you view the world. Other Judy Blume favorites include "Here's to you, Rachel Robinson" and "Superfudge."

Goosebumps- If you're into great fiction, nothing beats a book by R.L. Stine. I'd try "Say Cheese and Die" or "Welcome to Camp Nightmare" if you're ready for a fright!

I would suggest more, but I think getting through the Goosebumps and Babysitters Club series will be enough for you to handle for the rest of the summer.
