New story, people. Hope you likes, if not... Well, tough.
Title: A Place To Call Home
Fandom: Hoot (I think I'm going for the book more)
Rating: PG-13
Pairing: Mullet/Roy (don't like, don't read), brief Roy/Beatrice
Summary: "Home ain't walls and floors, Tex. It's right here, and no one can take that away from us."
Overall Warnings: Slash (DUH!), some cussing, and glispes of abuse and neglection.
Prologue: Truancy
Roy smiled along with Beatrice as they walked through the double doors of Graham High School for the first time, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. He just wasn’t as enthusiastic about being a freshman as Bea was. The girl hadn’t spoken of anything else since the end of the last school year. Though he supposed that was another way to keep him distracted from the bad mood he’d been in since Mullet Fingers vanished off the face of the earth. He couldn’t blame her for not telling him where the boy was because, if the jittery glances whenever they visited the Molly Bell were any indication, she was in the same boat that he was. Nearly a year had passed and they both were getting worried. Mr. and Mrs. Eberhardt began to notice the change in Roy, how quiet he was, and the way his grades were steadily falling. They hoped he’d make new friends this year, as kids from many other towns attended Graham. Unfortunately, his fame from saving the owls had faded, and he was a dork again.
"Outta my way, pipsqueak," a boy that looked like he could’ve been Danna’s older cousin growled as he shoved past him.
Roy watched impassively as his three ring binder slipped from his fingers and landed on the linoleum floor with a resounding crack. Things were back to way they used to be. He sighed quietly and stooped down to pick the binder up, then glanced at the clock in the front hallway. Ten minutes until AA. Beatrice had disappeared somewhere to talk to her soccer friends (after promising to sit with him at lunch). People shuffled this way and that, paying no mind to him. The whole place seemed too busy and… Stifling. There was no room to walk without brushing against someone. He didn’t like it at all.
"Truancy…" he murmured to himself, remembering what his dad had said. "Well, it’s not like I haven’t broken laws before."
Beatrice didn’t see Roy at lunch that day.
