Please read Part One first, if you haven't already!
http://japanesedream.livejournal.com/384439.html Had to do this in 2 parts, 'cuz it got so long! This entry is entirely related to the Q&A sessions that finished up our day at Monster-Mania 16.
Please note that none of the Q&A clips linked below are my own footage, tho’ I took a good number of clips, myself. But these attendees did a fantastic job, & their stuff looks miles better than anything I could’ve posted, so I will direct you to them. For anybody who can’t YouTube, if you want (more) paraphrased highlights or a transcription of anything in particular, let me know, & I’ll do my best to oblige.
I have to say that each Q&A left its own distinct impression. Friday the 13th was first, & it was what you'd think of when you picture a Q&A session. Something asked, something answered, some amusing anecdotes, a bit of banter & playing off each other. They had a bit of a mish-mash of people from the various films in the franchise. Kane Hodder has played Jason in 4 of the movies (7-10, if memory serves); Tom Morga played Jason in the 5th one, Ted White in the 4th. These guys are all stuntmen, by profession, but they also had a couple of actors from the films; namely, Melanie Kinnaman from part 5, & Kirsten Baker from part 2.
Strangely, they'd brought Harvey Stephens in for this, too. Sadly, he went largely neglected until almost the end. But a couple people did, at last, talk to him. (The first, he said he'd buy a beer for in the bar afterward, LOL! XD)

I hadn’t really planned to get a lot of clips from this session, mainly wanting to get the ROTLD one (maybe a couple of Saints clips for my brother, as well), & not wanting to run out of available space on my memory card. But they kept saying really funny things & telling humourous anecdotes, which just seemed too good to miss! Kane Hodder is a real cut-up! “I don’t care if it’s fictional or real...I (just) like f**kin’ killin’ people.” XD There was a moment when Kane was talking about something, & Melanie said, "I’m scared," & sat on Tom Morga’s lap! XD She moved back before I could get a still-shot, tho’. :P Ted White had a lot of good stories - he was the veteran on the panel, & once doubled for Clark Gable!
There was a little kid whose family must’ve stayed for all or most of the Q&A’s, like we did. He kept asking the actors what it was like to play their roles - Jason, Freddy, Boondock Saints - I think they said he wants to be an actor when he grows up. It was quite cute.
The one thing I wish they could fix during these Q&A’s (both here & at Cherry Hill) was the fact that there weren’t any microphones for audience members to use for their questions, so half the time, you couldn’t hear what anybody was asking. A couple of the actors had to tell each other what the questions were. C’mon, Monster-Mania, you must rake in a penny or two, buy another mic for next year’s convention! In the meantime, ROTLD’s Miguel Nunez, Jr., came up with a really amusing solution to the problem.
ROTLD REUNION:
Allan Trautman (Tar-Man), Brian Peck (Scuz), Don Calfa (Ernie), Beverly Randolph (Tina), Jewel Shepard (Casey), John Philbin (Chuck), Thom Matthews (Freddie), Linnea Quigley (Trash), & Miguel Nunez Jr. (Spider),
This was the one I’d come for, & they did not disappoint! I even got to say a little something during this one. ^_^ When they first started taking questions from the audience, Jewel Shepard (who is really quirky!) threw up her hands & screamed, “I have a question!!” a couple of times. After a few Q’s, I said I wanted to know what her question was. XD Beverly Randolph said, “That’s a good question.” We never did find out if Jewel actually had one.
This session left us feeling as though we had been on a tv talk show! At one point, Miguel - who’d taken it upon himself to play the part of the host & run through the audience with the mic taking questions (Brian Peck asked, “Is it racist that we’re making the black guy do all the running around?” XD) - thought my mom had something to say, & started heading right for us! XD But she didn’t, & he moved on. XD
These guys had some awesomely funny stories from the set, too! Apparently, there was lots of sexual tension between some cast members. XD A particularly fun moment came when Don Calfa asked Allan Trautman if that were his actual tongue under the Tar-Man make-up! XD Someone else asked him to do the Tar-Man walk, which he did.
Tar-Man scene:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v415/japanesedream/Monster%20Mania%2016%20-%20Sept%202010/31-trautmantongue.jpg
Another moment of hilarity was someone’s mispronunciation of Clu Gulager’s name. We thought it was GOO-la-ger, but they pronounced it GULL-a-ger. The person asking the question said guh-LAY-ger. So it sounded like CLOO-ga-lay-ger, almost like one word. Miguel threw a “Caligula” in there, just to be funny. If you know about Caligula (or have seen the film), you’ll understand why I say it went nicely with the story about them making Miguel wear a dildo in his pants to accentuate...well, it’s obvious, isn’t it? He said the real part is actually very small. XD
Anywho, they also paid tribute to the co-stars that couldn’t be there (two have passed away, & Clu doesn’t travel much), as well as Dan O’Bannon, late director & screenplay writer, which was really nice.
I noted a couple of other memorable questions below, each beneath its respective clip.

Brian took some shots, too, saying he had to do it so he could know it really happened (the stars seemed to be baffled by the longevity of these movies, & the devotion of the fans), & to show his friends back home, who all think he’s a loser. XD
ELM STREET 3 REUNION (elmstreetgirl22):

The Nightmare on Elm St. 3 reunion felt like being in film school, or at a film seminar. The cast spent half their time answering one question, not even related to Elm St.! XD Which film role did you try out for & wish you’d gotten, but didn’t. Would you believe Heather Langenkamp read for Agnes of God? Or that Rodney Eastman was up for the River Phoenix part in My Own Private Idaho?
There were some sweet moments to this Q&A, where you’d see the actors hugging each other; mainly, Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, & John Saxon. They (Heather & Robert), in particular, were the ones most in awe of working with veterans like John, who’d done films ranging from old Westerns to a Bruce Lee flick! Funniest part, tho’, came at the beginning, when Rodney Eastman hadn’t shown up (Robert Englund goes, “I was in the bar, where’s Rodney?” XD), so Ira Heiden called him & put him on speaker-phone - he’d fallen asleep! Rodney asked if he ought to get dressed & come down, & we were all, like, “Yeah!” So Ira goes, “Get over here...we’re waiting for you. Put your pants on.” XD
Ira saying he’d wanted Cleavon Little’s role in Blazing Saddles, & Ken telling us he wanted to play Superman were pretty funny, too. Then Ken mentioned Elm St. 3 had made history - it was the first time a black person had survived a horror movie that had gone to sequel! XD
They also had some very nice things to say about co-star Patricia Arquette (particularly Robert & Heather; also, all the young men on-set were, apparently, very, very attracted to Patricia), & the writing skills of writer/director Wes Craven. They were also excited to note that Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Jg1c2uikHE) has been picked up by A&E & will air soon.
After filming almost all of ROTLD, my camera battery was nearly dead! I wasn’t able to do much more than take still shots, ’cuz I still had the Boondocks to get through. But it was cool just being that close to Robert Englund. :D
As for the Boondock Saints, it was like hanging out with your friends from high school...at about 4 in the morning! XD Very casual, very intimate, & very funny!
BOONDOCK SAINTS REUNION (elmstreetgirl22):
Sean Patrick Flanery (Connor), Norman Reedus (Murphy), David Della Rocco (Rocco)

This one, I will have to paraphrase, simply because no one’s been able to post it in its entirety. I might not remember everything, & if anyone does put up the rest of it, I’ll amend this to include those links. For now, to the best of my recollection (& totally out of order!), among the questions asked:
Your favourite scene - Sean said it was the bit where he’s handcuffed to the toilet & rips it out of the floor for his “baby brother”. Awww. XD (In the scene, he drops it off the balcony, onto the head of a bad guy who’s roughing up Norman.) Norman’s favourite scene was the courtroom scene near the end.
It was cool to learn they really did the things you see them do in the movie - most memorably, hanging from the ropes for the big shooting-the-mob scene! It’s a really fun, no-holds-barred kind of film. As Sean put it, “dudes being dudes”.
Notable little details: Norman scratched his chin on the microphone. Sean couldn’t hear a blessed thing anybody said, & Norman would have to tell him what the questions were; otherwise, he’d keep asking people to repeat themselves. Norman said there was an echo in the room, & asked us if we heard it. I think it may have been his mic.
In the film, they have Latin words tattooed on their hands, Veritas & Aequitas (a guy with a rather professional-looking camera inside the Saints’ signing room had the same tattoos on his hand). Someone asked what they meant. Answer: Truth & Justice.
Favourite line - while the cinematic brothers did mention or quote a line or 2 (Sean deferring to the Irish brogue they use in the films), the many, many, many F-bombs seemed to garner the most votes amongst the cast. XD
What did you keep from the movie? Among other things, Sean kept the casings of the bullets they shot. He suggested one day signing them & randomly giving them out to fans. That would be cool!
Working with Willem Dafoe - Norman told a couple of memorable anecdotes here. There’s a scene where the brothers are in the police station (Dafoe plays the detective who’s not only hot on their trail, but sympathetic to their cause), & the camera is doing this wonderful circular pan around them & Dafoe. Norman said every time the camera was behind Dafoe’s head to shoot them, he would stick his tongue out & make faces! So Norman kept screwing up his lines. He said if you watch the scene, you can see him look up at the ceiling a few times. It’s because he’s reading his lines from cue-cards over his head! XD Additionally, he was going to his apt. one day (I guess not long after doing the first film), & this weird homeless guy called his name (here, he mimicked someone with a very crooked walk, rather like ROTLD’s Tar-Man), & it turned out to be Dafoe! It was right before shooting began on Shadow of a Vampire, in which Dafoe played Nosferatu actor Max Schreck. You have to watch him tell it - funny! These guys were actually cracking each other up throughout the Q&A.
Did you know each other before BS? No, but they are good friends now - Norman’s in NYC, the other guys are in L.A., but they talk on the phone & get together when possible.
Rocco - the cat scene -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=US6eHQ8wFO8; he didn’t know the gun was going to be so loud! Sean said they’d kind of messed with him, telling him it wasn’t going to be loud, & then having to pretend they were as surprised as he was, while trying not to have a laughing fit at his reaction! Rocco said he thought the room had exploded.
Did you play any pranks on each other on-set? Sean: “Have you met me?” XD
Rocco - diner scene -
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aE36LfOWWMc (slightly edited); even Rocco couldn’t remember why his character was there. The other guys tried to tell him. I’m still not entirely sure, myself. (I don’t think Rocco is, either. XD) Originally, his character worked for the mob, but I think they were trying to get rid of him, so they were setting him up. The brothers, with whom he was friends & whom he later joins in their vigilante crusade (sort of), tried to tell him this, he didn’t believe them. Whatever the reason he went to the diner, he runs into a couple of mob guys & ultimately finds out the brothers were right.
Billy Connolly - will he be in the 3rd movie? Sean alluded to a 3rd film being in the works, tho’ it sounds in rather preliminary stages. The guys did say that Connolly will no doubt be a prominent force in their lives for...well, pretty much forever.
Can’t remember whether it was Connolly or Dafoe, but they talked about out-&-out lying to the press when promoting the second movie, saying he (whichever one it was) wasn’t going to be part of it, but in truth, he was in it from the start.
Other projects, past & future - they asked Norman about Six Ways to Sunday (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e_sqKqGDS1Q), as well as working on Blade 2 with Wesley Snipes (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jhgvn0v_9yc - edited). He was very excited to plug the upcoming AMC airing of The Walking Dead (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1v0uFms68U). Sean responded to questions about starring as the title roles in Powder (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeSZfsZqv7w) & Young Indiana Jones (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B0AewZhwuY), as well as the upcoming Saw VII (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4llZssPvXs8), & his Ju-jitsu (
http://www.hollywoodbjj.com/). EDIT: I forgot to mention that Sean will also be bringing his Ju-jitsu to our troops overseas, as part of a USO tour.
Norman had an anecdote about something I think he was in with French actress Elodie Bouchez, but I can’t remember the project. He was also able to note his own website (
http://www.bigbaldhead.com/), I believe it was during the question about whether they’d want to go behind the camera & direct. Norman does photography & has put out a collection of short films which he directed. He talked a little about each film. One is very much about sex...he mentioned someone dying in it, & someone else having sex with the corpse, which brings them back to life. The second was a look into the mind of jazz legend Miles Davis. The third - I think my favourite plotline - was about a comedian who has what Norman called “a breakdown within a breakdown”, & starts talking to fruit.
Coolest thing about this moment was Sean asking about the name of the website. “Did you get that from the Laurie Anderson song?” OMG, it sent me straight back to high school, when my first pen-pal & I used to trade cassettes in the mail - she got me into all sorts of nifty music, including Laurie Anderson! Norman said, yes, the site’s name did, indeed, come from the song “Sharkey’s Day” (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPbv2uVY6AY), which begins with Laurie going, “The sun’s coming up, like a big bald head.” He recalled attending a Laurie Anderson concert when he was young (his mom had taken him - this woman must be so cool! XD). He said Laurie came out in a fluorescent suit with an electronic violin (mimicking the odd sounds coming out of it as she played), with a big screen behind her, & as that song began, her face came up, huge, on the screen, & she said the opening line…”Scared the hell out of me!” he said. XD
Director you want to work with. Sean said there are, of course, the standards, like Spielberg, Scorcese, etc. Did Norman say Lynch? I forget. I know Rodney mentioned Lynch during Elm St. - they were noting memorable performances by Patricia Arquette, & he brought up Lost Highway (this made me happy!! As did his mention - during their discussion on films they, themselves, liked - of Asian horror films).
What music do you listen to off-set? Norman said he was a big Minor Threat fan. (Yay!) He mentioned some other music I didn’t know. Wasn’t familiar with any of the bands Sean mentioned. Rocco’s answer made my mom cheer - “F**kin’ Doors, man!” XD
If nothing else, given the state of my camera’s battery, I said I would get the family prayer from the Boondock Saints on video for my brother. Of course, they teased us by starting to say it (thanks, Rocco :P), & I started taping, but they cut off & said they’d do it at the end. In the meantime, Rocco has a scene in the first film where the mob guys make him tell a joke. So, of course, they figure he could tell a joke. But he couldn’t think of one. They tried a couple of times to bring this up, & finally, someone had to remind him of a good joke to tell (tho' not the one in the movie). It ended up being the ‘lawyer joke’.
To paraphrase, for those without YouTube access, since it is in one of the clips, a lawyer is in line at the bank. The woman behind him starts to give him a massage. He asks what she’s doing & she says, “I’m a masseuse, I’m giving you a massage.” He says, “Well, I’m a lawyer, but you don’t see me f**king the guy in front of me...”
Do they speak any other languages? Sean said something in German. Norman said, “I can say, ‘Toire wa doko desu ka?’ in Japanese.” He translated for the audience, but I already knew it means, “Where is the toilet?” XD Rocco said, “I can speak Canadian.” (I think he may have even added, “Sometimes.”) LOLZ all around!! XD
Speaking of Canada, funny story brought up by a couple of questions. I’ve only seen the first film so far, so this is all new to me, but there’s a shower scene in part 2 (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yrEQLnuJmE). One question was about who’d done the tattoos on their backs (an on-set artist), another about being naked in the deleted portion of the scene (it looks to be that scene)* where the brothers talk to their mother (this is hilarious! I agree with Sean that it should’ve been left in:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XwuNzAVUtUo). Firstly, Sean made us all laugh by noting that a guy had asked the question, & it’s the only scene where they’re naked. XD
*EDIT: 10/2/10 - These are different scenes; the back tattoos prove it; not to mention I just bought the first film on DVD. The shower scene is part 2, the mother scene is part 1.
Secondly, he had everybody in giggle-fits by telling us the story of the day they shot it. They’re in Canada, it’s Winter, it’s freezing. Their genitalia are somewhere up around their necks, it’s so cold. Sean was okay with it, but Norman was a bit hesitant, so they gave him a little ‘beanie’ with a drawstring to put around his manhood. They shoot the scene, & the soap slips from Norman’s hand, so they’re filming in slow-motion, & Sean’s doing this impression of Norman trying desperately to catch the soap in slo-mo! XD
Of course, he added that Norman’s priority quickly went from catching the soap to covering himself because his beanie had slipped off! XD Norman said he wasn’t about to bend over ‘cuz there were, like, 400 guys (crew & such) standing around watching him. XD
Sean noted a few YouTube clips he wanted us all to watch. Bonus points if you can figure out why. XD
Boondock Homeless Extras:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VY-mk8DFgeM Riley Wilcox, Boondock fan:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjUY_mkpsl0 The guy from the custom fangs stall (we recognised him ‘cuz he’d said he liked my paisley pants in Cherry Hill) asked Sean if he’d ever considered stand-up. He said he hadn’t, but might after tonight! XD
Something was brought up about a documentary called Overnight that puts Boondock Saints in a bad light. Sean said no cast or crew were even interviewed for it; it was as if, as he put it, “someone made a documentary about you” without interviewing any of your family, friends, co-workers, teachers, etc.
What was it like to play the Saints (that little kid again) - Sean said if you get a job doing something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life. In that vein, he hasn’t worked in a really long time.
What actress would you like to have on-screen sex with? Sean: “Do you want me to list them alphabetically?” XD This may have been where Norman’s Elodie Bouchez thing came into play, but I can’t remember. Rocco was funny; he mentioned an actress who was actually gonna be at the hotel the following weekend for a nostalgia thing: Dawn Wells - Maryann from Gilligan’s Island! XD Sean jumps in with a comment about how you knew she had to be the dirty girl, not Ginger. The ones who talk & flaunt end up being the boring ones. It’s the quiet ones, he insinuated, that are the ones to watch. XD Then he asks us not to put that up on YouTube, but it should remain “just between us”. (How totally funny was it that I would see Dawn on RuPaul’s Drag U the following week? XD)
Which band would you want to have play for you? Sean: “Again, we can go through the alphabet! A - Aerosmith; B - Beatles...”
A movie you like that you wish you could have been in. I remember Norman’s answer, specifically. He talked about Midnight Cowboy being the first movie he’d seen that really made him want to become an actor; it was the first time he’d seen it as more than just people talking in front of a camera kind of thing. He also alluded to really liking the Mad Max movies. Sean had his own little moment here, tho’, when he said of Rocco, “I wanna be the re-make of the f**kin’ DOORS, maaaaannn!!” XD We are still laughing about this.
A female fan sitting with what may have been her boyfriend raised her hand to ask a question. Norman said, kindly but quietly, “What’s up, baby?” & then apologised sweetly, as if he thought he’d offended her (or maybe her possibly-boyfriend): “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to say ‘baby’.” (Awww.) She asked if they’d gone on Howard Stern. She’d heard someone on there saying something about them, or something they thought the Saints had said, but they said they’d never been on the show, & hadn’t said it. But Norman said he didn’t know why they hadn’t been asked on, he actually thinks Howard’s show is funny.
The same couple then brought up something about BS co-star, Bob Marley, who plays Det. Greenly (
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0549125/) - Marley is, apparently, a stand-up comic, who is working on setting a world record for longest stand-up comedy sketch. They were fishing for details on this (the guy will get a 5-minute bathroom break every hour, but otherwise can’t sleep for 3 days. Sean said he’s gonna get sleep-deprivation psychosis!) He then whipped out his phone & tried to call the guy! But his voice-mail picked up. Sean had us all leave a message, tho’ - “We love you, Det. Greenly!” XD
Earlier, when we were standing in line to see the Saints, there was a muscular guy who reminded my brothers a bit of Billy Blanks, the guy who invented Tae-bo. With vampire fangs. XD He was with this roller derby-type girl dressed as a clown. We’d seen him later in the lounge. Both times, he kept saying if the crowd made enough noise, the clown would take her top off. So he walks in & says to Sean that he wants to finish the fight they started! Sean actually got up & said he’d be ready to go. (Naturally - the guy’s something like a black-belt in Brazilian Ju-jitsu!) Norman adds, “Dude, you’re in a room full of Boondock Saints fans, you won’t even get near him.” XD
Are you single? Sean said no. Norman: “Next question.” I can’t remember if Rocco said anything.
Another kicker, & the last thing I can remember before the finale, was Sean talking about Ron Jeremy, who has a scene in the first film. He did these really great & funny impressions of Ron, noting how Ron always talked about being well-endowed (“It’s about 2 inches...from the FLOOR!!” XD), & how he’d call Sean up at about 4 am to say they were gonna get, like, porn chicks to come over & he should come.
Last but not least, they FINALLY get to the prayer!! “Should we prayer it up?” asked Norman. I should’ve started filming there. Except Sean goes, “Everybody on your feet!!” If they’re all standing, I can’t catch anything on film unless I stand, too. XP But I had a whole mess of stuff in my lap (things we’d bought & things I’d brought), so I had to put it all down before I could get up. Then they started, & I was ticked! I missed the first line but caught the rest of the prayer, their very kind thank you to their fans, & them exiting.
I’m not gonna post my own clip, tho’, I’m gonna post this one - YOU CAN SEE US HERE!!
(nzasixx - thank you again!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77UA0hD4MNg For those who don’t’ know the prayer:
And Shepherds we shall be
For thee, my Lord, for thee.
Power hath descended forth from thy hand
that our feet may swiftly carry out thy command.
So we shall flow a river forth to thee,
and teeming with souls shall it ever be.
In Nomeni Patri Et Fili (Et) Spiritus Sancti.
They’d also done a Q&A in Cherry Hill, but we hadn’t attended that session. See the nzasixx Cherry Hill interview here:

Met Josh again outside the bar, where the Saints had gone (we suspected as much), but it was so crowded, you couldn’t get in there! Saw Jennifer Rubin across the hall, talking to some people. Rocco came out, I think he picked up some brochures. Then he talked to some people. Miguel Nunez, Jr. & Rodney Eastman were outside. We were kinda knackered, tho’, & everybody was hungry. Unfortunately, both the restaurant & café were closed. Had an hour’s drive back, & since nobody was in the mood for the Charles Band roadshow, & they were only airing films from that point on, we decided to call it a night. Said good-bye to Josh, found the car, & hit the road.
Chatted about our day on the way back, stopped for a quick bite of late-night fast food, & hit the hay not long after getting to my mom’s. Next day, before I headed back, we talked more about our adventures, & watched some tv (Weekend At Bernie’s was on - ROTLD’s Don Calfa is the guy that killed Bernie!) & whatnot, including ROTLD. Laughed our keesters off at that one, recalling everything the cast had said. Don’t think we’ll ever watch that film quite the same way, LOL! XD
Okay, I’ve kept you readers up long enough. Go to bed! XD
