Before Hokuto met Shintaro, he saw only in tones of grey, black, white and beige, something he called bright neutrals. His doctor said it was a rare condition that affected a slim percentage of humans, something was off with the receptors in his brain which ultimately affected the color cones in his eyes. Only when he was extremely elated did he see some sort of color, which was usually colors like very dark blue and nearly translucsent yellows.
This didn't happen very often.
Then, he met Shintaro.

It was his second year of college when he met the clumsy freshman outside of his chemistry class. What an ironic situation that would turn out to be.
"Sorry, senpai, I couldn't see you beyond my book." The clutz had said apologetically, rushing to pick up all the papers that had fallen out of Hokuto's hands when the younger bumped into him moments before.
Hokku waived the apology and chalked it up to nervous freshman looking for their classes and such, not really being affected by it until he started to see the light green on Morimoto's shirt.
"I... like your sweater." Hokuto mumbled nervously, wondering why the hell he could actually see a color he didn't know the title to. Partially due to the fact he had never seen it before, partially because he never cared to try and understand what a color looked like knowing he'd probably never see one. Until now.
"What color is that?" He asked, looking into the confused boy's face.
"Green?" Shintaro answered with a cute cock of his head, wondering if maybe he was being punked. Suddenly, the bell rang and Shintaro was gone with a quick apology and a 'see you around' wave.
Hokuto watched in awe as he watched Shintaro's light blue jeans turn the corner.

Morimoto had become someone Hokuto looked forward to seeing, he was always wearing bright colors, which illuminated the grey tones Hokuto could see, sometimes shining through to yellow.
"Can you describe what purple is?" Hokuto asked one day when the two were sitting in the campus courtyard, attempting to study for Morimoto's math final.
"Why purple in particular, senpai?" Shin looked at him with those sparkling eyes of his, making his heart jump happily, little specks of the blue on his shirt collar flooding into visibility.
"My mom's favorite color is purple but I've never been able to see it, I wanna know what about purple makes her so happy." Hokuto answered seriously, trying to convey his passion for wanting to finally see that damn color.
Shin sighed and looked down longingly at his notebook before finally mumbling, "I wish I could describe colors better to you Hokuto-senpai, it makes me sad that you can't see them." Matsumura watched as the tear that had fell onto Shin's notes smeared the ink slightly and make his handwriting all floody.
No one had ever cried over Hokuto's confliction before, he felt touched, that's when he noticed that Shin writes his notes in red pen.

Ever since the day Hokuto asked Shin about the color purple, he had begun to wear it in some way every time he knew he would see the older one. He hoped that some day a miracle would strike and Hokuto would finally be able to see his mom's favorite color.
"Morning Hokuto-senpai!" The cheery boy skipped up to Hokuto, who was particularly gloomy after a visit to his professor's office.
Matsumura mumbled a hi in response and began to walk away from a disappointed Shin, not realizing that underneath all the black tones, he recognized the orange on the wall's posters.
"What happened today?" Shintaro asked him three hours later, in the library after hours.
"I need to finish three extra credit assignments by this weekend in order to pass my AP credit this quarter." Hokuto explained with a sigh, he had been wanting to take Shintaro to an art exhibit downtown that weekend, they were having a show on black and white art. Hokuto thought it would be nice to have Shintaro understand a bit of what he saw everyday.
"I'll help you! Anything to make senpai smile again..." Shintaro trailed off, looking longingly at his sketchpad, which he never showed anyone.
Hokku looked at the younger confused and waited for him to explain, but it never came.

"Finished!" Hokuto exclaimed happily after finally printing his last extra credit essay, it was Sunday night and with the help of Shintaro, all his papers had been finished flawlessly.
Hokku sighed happily and admired the red outline of Shintaro's sketchbook, when he noticed a piece of paper sticking out of it. Listening to his curiousity, he gently pulled the paper free from under a sleeping Shin.
What he saw was beautiful, it was a sketch of Hokuto, gently smiling, while staring up at the fall leaves. Hokuto began to wonder when Shintaro could've possibly sketched this without his knowledge, that's when he realized, he was seeing purple.
It was in every corner of the sketch, in Hokuto's hair, his eyes, the leaves he was admiring, even Shintaro's signature at the bottom was written in a deep purple.
Suddenly he realized why his mother loved it so much.
