Mountain man

Hi all, this is my first post. Yoroshiku onegaishimasu :)
I'm translating a dialogue from a movie, and so far I have trouble with a sentence.
Context: Year 1906. A man wants to climb a very dangerous mountain, mt. Tsurugidake. Someone tells him he needs a good guide. There is a man in the Ooyama village who was his guide 5 years ago when he climbed mt. Tateyama. Thats what he says about this man: he is very humble and he knows a lot about mountains. Then he says the sentence I'm troubled with.

山歩きの勘のようなものを
身につけた男だ

I guess it means something like: "He is a man who learned how to go mountain walking by instinct". Is this correct?
Thank you very much for your help.
