ETA: Mmm, taking a look at japanophiles' recent posts and number of members I suppose I can see how this community might give you better answers. I'll allow it, but as an exception. The worst airline to Japan I've experienced is United. In the economy class, I was super uncomfortable and felt trapped in a prison in the sky. I took United for two round trips and decided...NEVER AGAIN.
I took American Airlines for one round trip and it was okay from what I remember...but not amazing or anything.

I totally forgot it matters where people are flying from.
I fly from LAX and Singapore Airlines was usually one of the less expensive options from there.
For some reason ANA was always more expensive.
