ikr?! He and Matsumoto both do, and Matsumoto's even produced and directed a film (which he also starred in) that's allegedly really good.

Take a chance to watch "Jinsei wa jojo da" series (1995). Hamada played a lead role in this dorama in a duo with young Kimura Takuya. Hamada's role had some comic elements at the beginning of the story but later it was drama, almost tragedy, and Hamada-san did a great job. I don't how he was in his other series, but in "Jinsei" Hamada was brilliant.
