Hm

This is a terrible crime but quite honestly, for some people, the internet is their only connection to the wider world. Face to face and outside "with people" doesn't work for everyone and he probably felt trapped and disconnected among several other psychological problems.

It's not the first, it won't be the last.

I wish the outside wouldn't look down on Internet users, netizens, what have you, because it really is an other realm that people exist and only exist in.

Some people are only themselves online because the "world" has nothing to offer them.

hopefully he'll get help and justice for his crime.

I think people have the right to be horrified when people choose to resort to these sort of violent actions. And say what you will, but living a life confined only to your home without going for walks or anything else are unhealthy. Peer to peer interaction on the web can be a fantastic thing. But ideally, it shouldn't be your only human contact. The world is enormous and the internet is only a part of it. So I find it difficult to believe that if you have a passion there is absolutely no way other then online to explore it. Even 'Otaku' and 'comic nerds' go to conventions and meet people who are like minded and do things in their interests. Comicon is one example. I don't think people should scorn or ostracize people who are dependent on the internet but try to find ways to offer them help and guidance. But pretending like it's healthy behavior just doesn't make sense to me.

This is really sad, but it's becoming a common thing in Japan. People get discouraged with the economy and the world and feel they can't do anything, so they stay indoors and live on the internet. And society doesn't make it any easier for these people, either.

As sad as it is, I'm almost not surprised something like this happened. When you get so attached to something and it's suddenly gone, it can make you crazy. I hope he can get help, though.
