NTV is broadcasting a golf-themed drama series this spring, titled "Pro Golfer Hana." Co-stars Rosa Kato (24) and Nana Katase (28) have been earnestly preparing for their parts through lessons from professional golf teachers.
With the popularity of young stars like Ryo Ishikawa (18) and Ai Miyazato (24), golf has been enjoying a boom in Japan. It is even reported that the term "golkon" ("golf" plus "goukon") has started spreading among young adults, referring to a golf-themed group date.
In the comedic "Pro Golfer Hana," Kato plays Hana Nomiya, a young woman aiming to become a professional golfer for the sake of her family and their debt. Katase, on the other hand, plays the gifted golfer Riko Takase, a wealthy young lady who detests poverty.
Kato actually started golfing about two or three years ago on her own, but she said she became frustrated by her lack of progress. Along with Katase, who is a complete beginner, she started training for the drama around the end of last year. Producers are hoping to film the golf scenes without having to use stand-ins for the two actresses.
"Pro Golfer Hana" will be aired on Thursdays at 11:58pm. The first episode is scheduled for April 8
