First Peek at NHK’s Tempest (Nakama Yukie, Takaoka Saki and Wakamura Mayumi)

The press conference for NHk’s upcoming summer period drama, Tempest, was held yesterday at its Yokohama studio. Nakama Yukie and her co-stars, actresses Takaoka Saki and Wakamura Mayumi, turned out for the event in traditional costumes of gorgeously beautiful colours.

Tempest, which is based on the best selling novel by Ikegami Eiichi, depicts the ups and downs in the life of one female in the Ryukyu Kingdom during the closing days of the Tokugawa shogunate. Nakama Yukie stars as the heroine, Mazuru, who decides to shut herself off from love and live as a male following the disappearance of her older brother, but later returns to the kingdom as a female. “I paid attention to the tone of my voice and other small details to distinguish my roles as a male and female. Because Mazuru acted as though she was a male in the first half, when she returned as a female in the later half, she forgot how a woman’s feelings were!” Nakama laughed as she said this.

It was also announced at the press conference that Okinawan-born singer Amuro Namie’s song, Tempest, will be used as the theme song. Nakama expressed joy at the news, “I was surprised when I heard her name. I never imagined such a big star would be singing the song.”

Tempest is scheduled to have 10 episodes and starts airing on NHK’s BS Premium every Sunday from 17 July 2011.
