Tokyohive previously reported that idol group AKB48 had been chosen to MC for MTV’s VIDEO MUSIC AID JAPAN award ceremony. Today, it was announced that male group EXILE will also make an appearance!
EXILE has been chosen to participate in MTV’s international award ceremony, VIDEO MUSIC AID JAPAN (VMAJ), which will be held on June 25 at Chiba’s Makuhari Messe.
This year, VMAJ will double as a charity event for earthquake and tsunami relief efforts, enlisting the help of American singer Lady Gaga (25), who will come to Japan to participate as well. The show, which will be broadcast by MTV throughout the world, is expected to attract more than 600 million viewers.
EXILE sees their participation in the event as an opportunity to send a message to the rest of the world, one that stresses the importance of Japanese relief efforts. Under the slogan of “~Reenergizing Japan~” after the disaster, the group is calling for aid to be sent to the affected areas as soon as possible. They have not only donated directly to relief funds, but have also raised money through charity bracelet sales and sent 50,000 water bottles to affected areas.
Three performances are scheduled for the event, including Gaga and Nishino Kana (21). EXILE leader HIRO (41) commented, “It’s been over a month since the disaster hit, but with the message of “~Reenergizing Japan~”, we are making every effort to help through our daily activities.” He added, “We decided that if our participation in the event would help other people, then we would gladly agree to perform. If we can somehow inspire courage and hope in the people, if we can reenergize the Japanese nation even in some small way, it will be a success.”
