I think I may have mentioned once or twice that I enjoy watching Jeopardy!, although it's something that's usually best done solo for me. I had a bit of a pleasant surprise Thursday night during the Double Jeopardy round. I did a bit of a double-take when Alex Trebek announced the categories, and heard that one of them was "Hugo Award Winning Titles."

Now, I know what the Hugo Awards are. I vote for them. I have a number of friends who have been either Hugo nominees or winners. I have even been a stand-in at the award ceremony a couple of times for a friend who was nominated. (Unfortunately, he didn't win.) I was just surprised that the producers of Jeopardy! would think that enough of their viewers would know what the Hugos are, so that they could match wits with the contestants.

For this category, the answer was part of the title of a Hugo-winning work, and the contestant had to fill in the _____. (Q: What is "blank?") It also mentioned the year that particular work won the Hugo. The answers were as follows:

$400 -- 1960: "________ Troopers" by Robert Heinlein

$800 -- 1970: "The Left Hand Of ________" by Ursula K. LeGuin

$1200 -- 1974: "__________ With Rama" by Arthur C. Clarke

$1600 -- 1968: "I Have No Mouth And I Must _____" by Harlan Ellison

$2000 -- 1961: "A ________ For Leibowitz" by Walter M. Miller, Jr.

The contestants left that category for last. I'm guessing that none of them felt confident enough to try tackling it earlier. And none of the answers in the category were one of the two Daily Doubles for that round.

Watching at home, I had no trouble running the category. If I had been one of the contestants, I probably would have had no trouble running it in the game. And I probably would have chosen it as early as I could in the round, just to intimidate the other contestants.

Sadly, the contestants did not do as well as I did. Only the $400 and $2000 answers received the proper response (in the form of a question, of course). On the other three, all we heard once Alex read the answer was the sound of crickets. My reaction was this. (Q: What is disappointed?)

Still, I was pleased to see that category. I think the last time I was that pleased to see a category was when Jeopardy! used The Sci-Fi Channel as a category about a year ago.
