I love to make puns.
Strike that. I am an incorrigible punster, and it doesn't take much to incorrige me.
Most of the time, I can recognize an opportunity for dropping puns on the spur of the moment to my friends, usually in response to something they have said. I can tell when I have managed to catch my friends off-guard with a pun. Their usual response includes groans, and the utterance of such delightful phrases as "blunt force trauma."
Yesterday, I had one of those punnish moments when I caught someone completely off-guard. The pun was rather good; it was the reaction that made my enjoyment all the more satisfying.
I was at The Zone, one of Louisville's comic stores, and I was talking the clerk and the only other customer in the store. At the time, the topic of discussion was drinking, and I mentioned that I rarely get totally blitzed. Usually, by the time I start to feel a buzz, I will lay off the alcohol. I enjoy the buzz, and let it ride for about 30 to 45 minutes, switching to soft drinks or water during that time. I let the buzz wear off (more or less), and then I'm ready to start drinking again.
The other customer said that he wished he could do something like that. With him, though, the problem was that whenever he was somewhere that he was drinking, there was also someone that was baiting him to drink just a little more -- and usually not for the better.
I saw the opening, and I ran with it. "And of course, you can always find someone that is a master at baiting you."
Now, I have used a variation on that line on an email group. This was the first time, though, that I had ever used it verbally.
It took about five seconds for what I had said to fully sink in. Once it did, I was rewarded with both a double-take and one of the most pain-riddled groans I have ever heard from a victim of one of my puns. The other customer just looked at me in total disbelief. The clerk was amused, and softly chuckling. Well, he wasn’t the victim of the pun.
