It's that time of year again. Girl Scout Cookie time, I mean. The Girl Scouts are out in force, trying to get you to buy as many boxes of cookies as they can possibly can.
Believe it or not, I'm fairly resistant to the lure of Girl Scout Cookies. Considering my sweet tooth, this probably comes as a surprise to some people. There is just two little problems with Girl Scout Cookies, at least from my way of thinking. First, they are addictive. Second, they are only available for approximately three weeks every year. So if I bought a few boxes, once I finished eating them, I might have to wait up to 49 weeks before I could get my next fix.
If I'm in a cookie mood, I can satisfy my urges much better with Oreos. I can get those year-round. Or, I can do a little bit of experimenting in the kitchen -- a prospect that puts the fear of Ghu into some of my friends. (One friend has told me that just the aroma of my chocolate chip cookies and brownies is enough to put a diabetic into a coma at 50 meters.)
I've even developed a strategy for resisting Girl Scouts trying to sell me cookies. When they ask me, "Would you like to buy some Girl Scout Cookies?", I respond by quoting one of Christina Ricci's lines from The Addams Family. I simply ask them, "Are they made with real Girl Scouts?"
Most of the time, the Girl Scouts don't quite get the joke. On the other hand, there are usually one or two parents with the girls, and more often than not, they do understand both the joke, and what I'm referencing.
I remember one time in particular. There were a couple of moms with the Girl Scouts, as well as a dad who had obviously been pressed into service to haul boxes of cookies for the girls. When I said the line, one of the moms transfixed me with an "if looks could kill" stare. The dad, on the other hand, started laughing.
In the past two or three days, I've been running into Girl Scouts manning tables outside Kroger and Wal-Mart, just to name a couple of establishments. And as I have been walking through the entrance, once again I have been assaulted with that innocuous inquiry: "Would you like to buy some Girl Scout Cookies?"
By now, the reply is automatic, and I'm waiting for the reaction. I had a really good reaction today. I don't know if it was a mom or an older sister, but she let out a short bark of laughter, which dissolved into a giggle.
Just to verify my suspicions, I asked, "You know what I'm referencing, don't you?" When she said yes, I added, "You need to rent the movie and let them (meaning the Girl Scouts, who were as usual drawing a blank) watch it."
There are still a couple of weeks before the cookie sales end for the year. Still more time to have fun with this.
