Forever When?

As you may have guessed from previous files, I have a certain fondness for chocolate. If you asked me what my favorite candy bar was, my answer would probably be the Milky Way bar. What I can't tell you is why it's my favorite. All I know is that for as long as I can remember, Milky Way has been one of the candy bars that I have grabbed most often.

I love both varieties of Milky Way. Milky Way Dark (now called Milky Way Midnight) was introduced in 1989. I don't remember if I first saw it on the shelf, or if I first saw an ad for it. Either way, when I first became aware of it, my eyes lit up. I love dark chocolate, and there just aren't that many candy bars on the market containing dark chocolate. I was delighted to see the new addition.

Not too long ago, I was doing some random websurfing, and I decided to check out Milky Way's website. I knew that I would probably find a few interesting bits of information, particularly if there was a page on Milky Way's history. Well, I found that page, and what I found came as a surprise to me.

Milky Way was first introduced in 1923, and came in chocolate and vanilla flavors. That referred to the flavors of the nougat center of the bar, because the vanilla bar was covered in dark chocolate. In 1936, the vanilla Milky Way bar received a name change; it was now called the Forever Yours bar.

Forever Yours was produced until 1979, when it was discontinued. From what the website says, it was popular enough that it was reintroduced in 1989 as Milky Way Dark. And in 2000, it was renamed Milky Way Midnight.

Now, here's the thing that surprised me. I don't remember the Forever Yours bar. I can remember seeing commercials for Milky Way, Snickers, and 3 Musketeers, but I can't recall ever seeing a commercial for Forever Yours. I don't remember ever seeing that particular candy bar on the shelves, whether it was a grocery store, drugstore, or department store.

I was old enough in 1979 that I would have remembered seeing this candy bar. I would have remembered seeing one of the few dark chocolate candy bars on the market. I know that if I had seen it, I would have tried it at least once. No, I would have tried it more than just once. And given that Forever Yours is essentially the same as Milky Way Midnight, it would have quite likely been one of my favorites -- quite probably even rivaling Milky Way for being my favorite candy bar.

So why don't I remember Forever Yours? Why is it that I apparently never saw a candy bar that apparently received the same national distribution as other candy bars from M&M/Mars?
