I only watched the first ep of the American Office--does it get better? Because I had trouble understanding the characters too. Like...we have volunteer deputies and sherriffs, but it wasn't a thing that I could imagine anyone doing so I didn't know what that was supposed to mean for Dwight. Not like the way I could pretty much get the difference between what the TA was and what Gareth was acting like it was, if that makes sense. I felt like the only reason Dwight did this thing was because they were finding a substitute for Gareth's life

Judging by other people's reactions (the word applied most often was *dumb*, and I can see why), I was expecting the remake to be awful, so I was pleasantly surprised with the first episode, but it probably wouldn't have been enough to keep me watching if it hadn't been on every night. I feel like the first one was very focussed around Michael, but I think that was necessary to establish the show. I'm up-to-date on the second series now, and I'm having a much better time with him. I've begun to care about how sad he is, rather than just rolling my eyes at him. It gets more personal.

I think it's supposed make me think Dwight's weird, but I have no understanding of its implications. I thought Sherriffs were elected policemen with guns and things. So does it allow Dwight to pretend to be tough? Or is he actually answering phones and posting speeding tickets and thinking that makes him cool? I don't know. Dwight

Dwight seems a bit more insane than pathetic to me. (And as an aside, I'm well impressed with your understanding the TA: I had to ask my mother's boyfriend to explain.)
I actually have no clue what a volunteer deputy would actually do in...where are they again? I don't really understand what the TA is, but just the way people responded to it I could sort of get how it was viewed vs. the way Gareth was trying desperately to present it.:-)
I'm not sure where you're coming from on Not!Dawn here. I don't think Pam's been portrayed as Christian -- maybe you're confusing her with Angela, a different recurring worker? No, it was Not!Dawn. I just remember at some point when she was talking

I didn't even get the difference, though. I didn't have a clue what Gareth was on about. The first time I saw it I watched it with her boyfriend, and I had to ask why he was laughing. Seriously. So sad!
all this in my mind made her came across as someone who came from a background that included a lot of church
That didn't even occur to me. I'll have to look for it when I rewatch. I haven't noticed it in the rest of the series, but it's something I could've easily missed.
Interesting. Neither the US version of QaF or The Office have aired here, and frankly, I loved both series so much that I'm a bit afraid of downloading them. But maybe I'll have to. Because say what you want to, but at least the American remakes last longer. ;-)
...that's what I'm thinking, about the length, but then I remembered that The Office is based around proper relationships and tedium. What if the writers end up having to finish (or continue!) the show unexpectedly just because the TV network tells them to? All that fascinating tedium could get really tedious! You have to plan a romance like Not!Tim and Not!Dawn's! But I'm with you on prolonging pleasure.
I've seen the first three series of QAF US, and I thought they were okay, but I was never in love with the original, sorry!
