I need a professional viewpoint on this situation.
Friday morning I received a call around 7am from my manager at circle k harassing me about some missing safe drop that occurred Thursday at 3pm while I was cashiering on someone elses cash register. I remember the scenario. He walked in for his shift, so I got the drop ready, and followed my general ritual (pull safe handle down, deposit money) I have been accused of both pocketing the envelope of 120 dollars, and/or throwing it in the garbage can that sits directly next to the safe. Anyhow the call ended I didnt hear from him for the weekend (off Friday and Saturday) Sunday I work graveyards. I reviewed the recording myself during some down time. The footage is shifty, its not running steadily. At one point it even looks like the money just VANISHES from my hand. I also noticed the clock on this camera is out of sync with the rest of the surveillance cameras, and it is the only view of the safe but when I approach the safe my back covers a good shot of the safe.
So he comes in Monday AM about 45 minutes earlier than typical. I ask him if the money shows up. He says "NO! and it looks like you threw it away!" or something of the kind. I ask if he has reported it to the marketing manager to have an investigation done and he said he had not. I was under the impression that over/short 5 dollars that hasn't been accounted for after some period of time had to be counseled. I asked him why, he said "well thats just gonna make you look bad! And you were working on someone elses register which isn't supposed to happen either!" So I just stop talking, get on with my work but Im thinking, if that much money was missing from my account or any records of mine, I would immediately be notifying my bank or whomever! To track it down! So as Im making coffee, 10 minutes before 6am (mind you Ive been there since 9pm the previous night 4/21) he comes up behind me
"Is there something wrong Shane, anything we need to talk about?" In a very... Strange manner. I say "why are you paranoid?" and just explain to him that he should have notified someone to get to the bottom of this he raises his voice level and I just put my hand up and tell him to stop. Im done talking about it. I get back to business, as Im passing him by at one point he says "You can just leave if you want to." I ignore it and finish out my 5 minutes by cleaning up someone elses mess.
I take down the Market Managers (Eddie) number as Im leaving, and call him, leave a message. When I got home I called the HR manager and she told me I would call her if Im being terminated or suspended. Eddie notifies Brian (my manager) sometime that afternoon while Im asleep Brian calls, cancels my shift for that night and tells me to come in the following day for a meeting with Eddie and Brian. We review the tapes they really can't determine whether or not the drop went in the safe, in the trash, or in my pocket. I know for certain I didnt pocket it! I dont rule out the possibility of throwing it away but explain that I really can't see myself doing that. The safe makes a distinct noise when you open it to make the drops! I never lock my keys in my car, am very organized these days!
So to close the story for now, a week later, 120 dollars is still missing, tomorrow I think they want me to sign a paper that says I threw it away! Im not signing it I think I can uphold the 5th Amendment? "or shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself," If there were two cameras with a clear shot, a HUMAN eye witness of the account, Maybe. But each one of my coworkers knows about it, its extremely demeaning, and not something I appreciate being brought up or joked about while I am trying to go about my business. Also that Thursday (4/21) the safe was taking a lot longer to dispense money (its a timed safe, we keep cash low and when we have to break big bills, the safe dispensed the money in tubes at the push of a button) it generally took 3 minutes, but that day it was taking a full 5 minutes to allow for the next dispensing. When Brian called that day I informed him that it was rather bothersome and out of the ordinary, he had no idea why. But when I came to work Sunday I used a timer and it was dispensing at two minutes intervals.
One more thing. Ive witnessed surveillance being edited. We have this thing called mystery shoppers. These supposedly trained, unmarked people come in and critique our skill and store appearance and submit the critique to the head manager. The last time we got the shopper, there was some grief because we got a 91% for not greeting the customer when they walked through the door (the store is nearly the size of A.L. and only two workers on this shift! Only one worker on graveyard. ) Anyhow I went to look at the surveillance camera to see who this mystery shopper was juts for the heck of it and at the specified time the footage jumps from in the store, to in some unidentifiable warehouse! So we can't see who the shopper is, I guess? But if this footage can be remotely edited... So strange, right?
Well, I know thats a lot to read. I need to fully assess the situation in my own words to reassure myself what Im witnessing is a bit bogus. Of course its nice to have someone outside of the situation hear my case. I think its time to find a new job.
