Tutorial #9: Manipping

This is a manip I just did for kalalanekent of Lois Lane's twins. Luckily, the background for both pictures is white or close to it, so I just pasted one into the other picture, resized Jason a bit to match Kala, and set his layer to Darken:

Next, I went over the bit of Kala's hair next to Jason with a large fuzzy brush and erased it. To cancel out the fuzziness that appeared at the edges, I went over the hair with the sharpening tool:

They don't look like they're really in the same picture, though. So above Kala's layer and below Jason's, I increased the Brightness and Contrast slightly and increased the amount of cyan and green in the picture a bit. This way Kala looks more like she's Jason's twin in the same room with him:

Then, since kalalanekent says Kala's hair is very dark, I painted over it on a new layer with a dark gray color, using a medium-sized fuzzy brush:

Then I set this layer to Soft Light, duplicated it, and set the duplicated layer at about 60% opacity:

Her hair is actually black, not brown, though, so I duplicated the layer one more time and set it to Color at about 40% opacity:

Jason's eyes are supposed to be blue and Kala's hazel, so I painted over them with those colors, staying inside the black line around the eye, and set this new layer to Color:

Time to fix up the background. I painted a bit of black over Jason and Kala's shared shirt-border, so that her hair blends into his jacket, and fixed that damn blue line at the top by painting over it with white:

I then realized I needed to add some brown highlights to Kala's hair, to really make it look like she's next to Jason. So I chose a soft light brown and went over a few spots, very lightly, with a fuzzy brush, set on Soft Light:

Finally I added the background, a cap of Kate Bosworth in the office in Superman Returns. I enlarged it so that the background was big enough to cover all the white space and moved it over so Bosworth was out of the way, set it to Multiply, then put a layer mask on it and carefully erased the parts covering the twins' faces.

Finished!
