Jack walked up to the front door of Rhiannon's house, took and deep breath and then knocked firmly on it with his knuckles.
“Jack,” Rhiannon said, greeting him with a smile upon opening the door. “come in, can I take your coat? It's warm in here.”
Jack slipped his coat off and handed it to her, with a word of thanks.
“Ianto's in the living room,” she said, indicating the correct door. “coffee? Tea?”
“Coffee, black please,” Jack replied, took a moment then headed through the door and into the room where he found Ianto propped up on the sofa with pillows and a blanket over him, despite the heat the radiators were emitting.
“Hey,” Jack said, feeling more nervous that he would have liked to admit.
“Hi,” Ianto replied, not looking him in the eye. “don't just stand there, sit.”
Jack picked the armchair that was set at an angle so that he would be facing the younger man and sat. He quietly looked him over, he was definitely looking much better than the last time he had seen him in hospital, he colour was looking more healthy.
“How are you feeling?” Jack asked him, breaking the silence.
“Better,” Ianto replied with a small nod of his head. “mild headaches now and then but the doctors said that was normal, but to go back if they got bad.”
“Good, good,” Jack replied. “and your memory? Anything?”
“Not really, well something tiny I think, but I don't think it's relevant,” Ianto answered.
“Might be,”Jack asked with hope. “tell me?”
“Just something about eating more vegetables,” Ianto said with a shrug of his shoulders.
“That was me, I said that,” Jack told him with a grin. “a long time ago, you were living off takeaways and I told you to at least add some veggies to them to up your intake.”
“I … really?” Ianto questioned.
“Yeah,” Jack said with a small chuckle at the look on Ianto's face.
“Oh …” Ianto uttered, interupted by his sister coming into the room with two mugs of coffee for them.
“Right, well I'll be in the kitchen preparing for our annual buffet this evening,” Rhiannon stated. “we have one every Christmas Eve, makes it easy for me to prep stuff for the big day.”
With that she went quickly from the room and silence fell between them.
“So …” Jack began. “how are we going to do this?”
“I'm not sure,” Ianto admitted. “I hadn't really thought that far ahead to be honest.”
“I had an idea,” Jack began explaining. “I thought I could tell you stories, of things we have done, see if it helps?”
Ianto shrugged again. “I guess it wouldn't hurt.”
Jack sat back in the armchair and began to think, he didn't want to tell him anything that might upset him but it needed to be something that could trigger a memory.
“Okay, there was this one time ...”Jack began but got cut off by Ianto.
“At band camp?” Ianto asked with a smile playing on his lips to a confused Jack.
“What?”
“Sorry, it's a line from a film, American Pie,” Ianto said, the smile widening into a grin. “you've never seen it then?”
“I've never had much time for going to the movies,” Jack admitted, a little sadly.
“They are in colour and everything now,” Ianto joked, feeling some of the tension in the room begin to drain away.
“Cheeky!” Jack stated, taking a sip of his coffee and them grimacing.
“Sorry, I should have warned you about my sisters coffee,” Ianto told him. “anyway, what were you going to tell me?”
“Actually, I've had a change of mind over the story,” Jack replied. “I have a better one.”
“Go on then?” Ianto urged.
“Okay, we, Torchwood were out on a mission and we were looking for something in an office block,” Jack began explaining. “I told you I liked offices, office romances and all that you told me to that some fetishes should stay private.”
Ianto laughed.
“Anyway, we had been … well, only way I can put it is … enjoying each others company,” Jack continued, watching the young man's face flush as he did so. “intimately, I mean … but we had never … well, I asked you to go on a date with me. Dinner and a movie.”
“Did I agree?” Ianto asked.
“Yeah,” Jack grinned. “you said as long as it wasn't in a office.”
“Oh … and did we? Go on a date?” Ianto enquired.
“Eventually,” Jack answered. “some stuff got in the way but yeah, we had our date.”
“What did we do?” Ianto asked, feeling more and more interested as the conversation went on, there was something about the older man … something he couldn't quite put his finger on but there was no way he was telling him that he smelt great, that would just be downright weird.
“We went out to a restaurant along the bay, nice place,” Jack answered with a smile at the memory. “we both had steak and then shared a desert, chocolate fudge cake and ice cream.”
“My favourite meal,” Ianto nodded. “and we went to the cinema?”
“We did, it was meant to be a scary monster movie but what with some of the stuff we, Torchwood deal with on a day to day basis it just seemed really stupid.” Jack replied. “We watched about half and then made a mutual decision to leave.”
“Did you walk me home like a gentleman?” Ianto joked, feeling more at ease.
“Of course,” Jack grinned. “well we got there eventually after stopping in a few dark places for a snog.”
Ianto felt his colour rising again.
“Then, well you invited me into your flat and we, well we made up for the missed entertainment of the film.”
“Oh ...”
“I wish you could remember,” Jack said, a sadness now showing on his face. “It was the first of many dates. Things happened during that time that brought us closer than ever and ...”
“What things?” Ianto asked, curious.
“Things I wish you could never remember,” Jack replied sadly, thinking of Owen and Tosh. “only happy stories today.”
“I wish I could remember something, anything other than about needing more bloody vegetable,” Ianto grumbled. “I am beginning to hate feeling like this, thinking I am only 15. It doesn't matter how many times I tell myself I'm not it's like my brain won't believe it.”
“So … you're not scared of the idea of me anymore?” Jack asked tentatively.
“Strangely, no,” Ianto replied honestly. “but that doesn't mean I am going to let you kiss me!”
“You sure?” Jack asked with a mischievous grin.
“Positive!” Ianto stated. “Tell me more, please?”
Rhiannon who had been quietly evesdropping slipped way from the door and back to the kitchen, hoping that this really would work.
